Mentors and their proteges are, typically, a generation or two apart, but that does not apply to Mark Covert and Jon Sutherland. Sutherland, 42, of West Hills, tried out for the Valley College cross-country team in the fall of 1968 intending to increase his leg strength for the spring when he planned to pitch for the Monarch baseball team.

What began as a challenge between friends has developed into a lifelong obsession for distance runner Jon Sutherland of West Hills. Sutherland, 38, had just finished his freshman season at Valley College in the summer of 1969 when teammate Mark Covert told him that he had not missed a day of running in a year. Sutherland himself had not missed a day in more than two months so he figured that he too would try for a year. "And once I hit a year, it wasn't that hard, so I kept going," he said.

Jack Bauer's long, long days have finally paid off. Fox's "24" picked up three Emmy Awards on Sunday for drama, lead actor Kiefer Sutherland and director Jon Cassar. Sutherland has been nominated every year since the show went on the air late in 2001, but Sunday marked his first win. "Every once in a while, you'll have an evening that just reminds you that you are given too much, and this is that evening," Sutherland said.

A challenge that began more than 20 years ago has turned into an integral part of life for Mark Covert of Lancaster and Jon Sutherland of West Hills. Their goal in the late 1960s was to run every day for a year. More than two decades later, Covert and Sutherland have yet to miss a day. Having taken periodic breaks in his training during high school, Covert wanted to see if he could run every day for a year as a Valley College freshman.
