Pop singer Jonathan (Chico) DeBarge was dropped from the cast of the Sheriff's Department's anti-drug telethon after he was arrested last weekend for allegedly ferrying 2.2 pounds of cocaine from Los Angeles to Michigan. The telethon, to be broadcast Saturday, will raise money for the 3-year-old Substance Abuse and Narcotics Education program, dubbed SANE for short. A crime figure who spent nearly seven years in prison for racketeering died after he was shot in the head and back inside his Philadelphia row house. Relatives found John Casasanto, 35, slumped in his kitchen Saturday afternoon, and he was later pronounced dead, police Sgt. Roland Lee said. Casasanto had been released from prison about three years earlier. He was recently charged with assault in the Oct. 23 stabbing of dance-band singer Jonathan "Chico" DeBarge.

Two soul-singing DeBarge family members have been indicted on charges that they conspired with five people to bring more than two pounds of cocaine to Grand Rapids, Mich. Jonathan (Chico) DeBarge, 22, of Grand Rapids, was held Friday in the Kent County Jail, pending a hearing to determine whether he should remain in custody until trial. An arrest warrant was issued for Robert (Bobby) DeBarge, 32, of Los Angeles, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael MacDonald.

It's not that a 22-year-old Westwood artist who calls himself Arte (Ar-tay) pokes around in any old trash container. He prefers the ones outside those flossy Beverly Hills boutiques where he can find what he calls "designer garbage."
