The president of Occidental College this week made an emotional plea for support to some 60 faculty members, saying his administration was "shell shocked" by criticism over its handling of student sexual assault allegations. Speaking for 20 minutes without taking questions, President Jonathan Veitch pleaded for reconciliation on campus, saying the controversy had taken a toll "on my health and my soul," according to several people who attended the meeting. He mentioned that his five-year contract was up for renewal, which suggested to some that he needed the faculty's backing.

Occidental College faculty Monday overwhelmingly voted resolutions of no confidence against the campus attorney and another high-ranking administrator for what critics contended was their inadequate responses to allegations of sexual assaults against women at the Los Angeles liberal arts school. The symbolic vote comes two weeks after a group of Occidental students, faculty and alumni filed a civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, alleging that the school failed to protect women from sexual assaults over the last few years.

In a move that activists described as the first of its kind for any American college or university, Occidental College in Los Angeles is pledging to stay away from any investments in companies that manufacture military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines for general public sale. The recent move by Occidental College trustees came at the urging of faculty members who were horrified by the December 2012 massacre of 26 students and staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and other mass shootings.

The bridge that connects the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s with spoken word artists of today was crafted by poets like Sekou Sundiata. In the 1960s Sundiata was a young boy living in Harlem, coming of age during a time when the movement's giants -- Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni -- were transforming poetry. As an adult he carried the work forward as they had, wrestling with identity, history and the lives of black people in America.

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating USC over its handling of alleged sexual assault and rape cases after students filed a complaint with the federal government, officials said Monday. Two current USC students - both of whom allege being raped - said at a news conference that their 110-page complaint contains accounts from more than 100 students detailing problems with the university when handling reports of sexual assault. The complaint was filed last spring. Many of the students "were blamed for their victimization and were forced to watch impotently as their cases were routinely misreported, misconstrued, mishandled or discounted entirely," said Tucker Reed, one of the co-signers of the complaint who recently completed her junior year.

Occidental College's underreporting of sexual assault allegations was far more extensive than campus officials have acknowledged, according to documents, interviews and a Times review of two confidential federal complaints against the school. In October, the college said it had failed to disclose two dozen sexual assault allegations made by students in 2010 and 2011, a potential violation of federal law. At the time, officials said their revisions represented a complete accounting of the assault cases.

Is it an Obama bump? Is freshman enrollment at Occidental College skyrocketing because a certain young man from Hawaii started college there 30 years ago? Or is it just the unintended consequence of an insurance plan of sorts by admissions officers trying to protect the 1,868-student campus in uncertain economic times?
