Knight may have served his musical apprenticeship by doing the electric boogaloo in stone-washed jeans when he was a member of New Kids on the Block, but his debut album is such a giant step beyond the New Kids' boy-band pablum it should have its own ZIP code. Wisely, Knight decided to hook up with Janet Jackson's production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and that dynamic duo injects sonic sparkle into even the most workmanlike tracks.

Jordan Knight has a Top 10 song, a fan-favorite video on MTV and a big summer tour on tap, but here's how he knows he's made a comeback: The girls are screaming again. Six years ago, Knight left the New Kids on the Block--that hugely successful pop group turned pop culture punch line--and he had good reason to doubt he would hear the girls cry his name again. In 1995, after all, boy bands were record sales poison. "I always thought, 'It can happen again,' " Knight said.

As soon as I read your "reviews" of New Kids on the Block, I was disgusted and nauseous ("Low Voltage Outing for New Kids," by Mike Boehm; "Old Kids Watch From a Distance," by Randy Lewis, Sept. 14). It's people like you that feel they always have to dog the New Kids. I know I personally would rather listen to NKOTB than, say, Guns N' Roses. And then there are the people that write (and edit) without checking the facts before printing them for millions of American people to see. Unless that was Mr. Lewis' intention.

Jordan Knight of New Kids on the Block and one of the pop group's bodyguard are being sued by a man who says he was assaulted in a nightclub. Douglas Winston of Yonkers, N.Y., charged in a complaint filed in state court Thursday that bodyguard Steven Chandler attacked him without provocation Aug. 8. They may be pushing 40, but the New Kids are returning to the block. The boy band New Kids on the Block, which sold 70 million albums in the 1980s and early '90s, has reunited and plans to release an album with new music and go on tour. The reunion comes 20 years after the release of the group's multiplatinum album, "Hanging Tough." The group disbanded in 1994. Donnie Wahlberg has since acted on television and in movies, while Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre and Danny Wood released solo albums.

Innocent Kids: A two-week trial in Manhattan federal court that attracted dozens of teeny-boppers ended Friday with a jury deciding that two members of New Kids on the Block were innocent of copyright infringement. The two New Kids--Jordan Knight and Danny Wood--and their friend Tommy Page were accused of stealing the chorus of "I'll Be Your Everything," written by George Soule and recorded by Percy Sledge in 1974, for a song of the same title recorded by Page.

Most music fans over 18 probably wouldn't be caught dead listening to anything by these idols of the early-teen set. But this collection of old and new Christmas tunes might win over some skeptics. It's not great, but it's much better than you'd expect. It's hard to ruin a Christmas album. Any singer with a shred of talent can handle foolproof holiday standards. But New Kids do it the hard way, with only three standards--"The Christmas Song," "White Christmas" and "Little Drummer Boy."
