The Times' Chris Dufresne unveils his preseason college football top 25, one day (and team) at a time. No. 8 Texas The decision last year to visit Austin to anoint Texas as preseason No. 1 was based on two crucial factors: senior quarterback Colt McCoy and Mexican food. Darn if Texas didn't nearly win the whole enchilada. The Longhorns had a few close scrapes along the way — if you call close needing one second put back on the clock in the Big 12 Conference title game to kick the game-winning field goal against Nebraska — but made it all the way to the Bowl Championship Series title game at the Rose Bowl.

At 5 feet 9 and 195 pounds, Javier Arenas will be one of the smallest players on the field tonight at the Rose Bowl. He is also among the players most likely to have a huge effect on the outcome of the Bowl Championship Series title game. The Alabama senior has game-changing potential at three positions. He is the most productive punt returner in Southeastern Conference history, averaging 16.3 yards a return this season. When returning kickoffs, he has a 29-yard average. Arenas is good at his regular job too. He was a first-team All-America selection at cornerback and a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to college football's top defensive back.

Jordan Shipley sought out the future of Texas football, finding freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert walking with his head down. The Longhorns' senior wide receiver would have none of that. "This is going to be great for you," Shipley said, cupping his hand behind Gilbert's neck to pull him closer to drive the words home. "I am going to enjoy watching you." This was not the type of performance that would normally merit such praise. Gilbert was too often the Alabama defense's best friend.

Given the choice of getting his quarterback a school record or playing it safe and sane, Coach Mack Brown and No. 2 Texas took the high road in a 35-3 win over Central Florida. Brown removed Colt McCoy with just over nine minutes to play, even though the senior was just three yards short of matching the school record for yards passing in a game. McCoy completed 33 of 42 passes for 470 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Brown said he decided against putting McCoy back in the game to show sportsmanship and because of the possibility of injury.

A lot can happen in one second. No one on the Texas football team knows that better than safety Blake Gideon . A year ago, one second was all that was left when Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree tip-toed into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown that cost Texas a chance to get to the national title game. Last month, one second was left when Hunter Lawrence kicked a 46-yard field goal to win the Big 12 Conference championship game and send Texas to Thursday's national title game against Alabama.
