Octavio Villa rushed eight times for 91 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Santiago to a 53-0 Garden Grove League victory over Bolsa Grande Friday night. The victory was costly for the Cavaliers (4-2, 2-0). Leading rusher Carlos Carbajal and starting lineman Mario Carbajal went down with knee injuries in the first half. Carlos Carbajal, who has rushed for more than 600 yards this season, finished with 44 yards in five carries.

Hopes for an individual championship eluded Moorpark College on Saturday in the state wrestling finals at Santa Rosa College. Moorpark's Todd Hoult and Jason Pratt both finished second after losing in the championship match. Modesto freshman Brian Campbell (32-1) slipped past Hoult (28-7) at 190 pounds, 4-3, and Fresno's Alphonzo Tucker (37-0) lived up to his top-seeding billing by defeating Pratt (30-7) at 158 pounds, 12-6. Fresno City College claimed its fifth team title, edging Cerritos, 116.

A 21-year-old man was shot to death late Saturday on an Oxnard street, the 25th slaying in the city this year and the third in the Colonia neighborhood in a little more than a month. Ricardo Veronica was found shortly before midnight Saturday on a residential sidewalk in the 1400 block of East 2nd Street on the city's north end.

It's becoming an annual ritual for Coach John Keever and the Moorpark College wrestling team. Under Keever the past 25 seasons, the Raiders have built one of the most respected programs in the state, a program that won state titles in 1990 and 1991 and has produced 11 individual champions. Now, Keever believes sophomores Jason Pratt, Jorge Ruiz and Todd Hoult could add to that individual total at the state junior college championships starting today and concluding Saturday at Santa Rosa College.

A weekend of violence in the Colonia neighborhood of Oxnard left one man dead from a beating Saturday night and two others suffering from stab wounds in an unrelated robbery early Sunday, authorities said. Jorge Ruiz Ramirez, 36, of Oxnard was beaten to death in what was the second homicide in less than a week in the neighborhood, Oxnard Police officials said. The killing brought to 22 the number of homicides in Oxnard this year, compared with 11 for all of 2002.

Prosecutors dismissed robbery charges Friday against an ex-convict who is still considered the prime suspect in the shooting death of a Laguna Beach ice cream shop owner in a separate robbery the same evening. Manuel Ramirez Rodriguez, 26, of Corona, no longer faces charges in Orange County, but he remained in custody Friday pending a transfer to Riverside County, where he faces unrelated robbery and parole violation charges.
