Jose Alfredo Hernandez has been appointed to Santa Ana Unified School District's board of trustees, the district announced Wednesday. The appointment of Hernandez, 33, an attorney who has two children attending district schools, fills a vacancy created by Sal Tinajero's election to the City Council in November. Hernandez, who attended city schools and has been a substitute teacher in the district, was chosen for the five-member board from a field of 16 applicants.

Two teenage boys killed in a Tustin garage fire over the weekend were identified Wednesday by the Orange County coroner's office. David Finnerty, 14, and David Grant, 16, both of Tustin, died early Sunday when the garage in which they were apparently sleeping caught fire and burned. The cause of the fire in the 16500 block of Lorelei Lane is under investigation, police officials said.

For the second time in a decade, the cash-strapped Santa Ana Unified School District is asking voters to approve a construction bond to fund improvements to its school buildings. The $200-million bond, Measure G on Tuesday's ballot, would make the district eligible for up to $120 million in state matching funds to ease overcrowding.

While high schools across the state are toughening their graduation requirements to prepare students for college, one of the state's largest school districts is planning to make it easier for students to graduate. In a proposal that would cut out health, college and career planning, world geography and earth science as required courses, the Santa Ana Unified School District is seeking to reduce the number of credits necessary to graduate.
