A Vista jury found Jose Luis Maldonado guilty of first-degree murder Friday in the shooting death of his boss, setting the stage for a trial on whether Maldonado was sane at the time of the killing. During the trial, the six-man, six-woman jury heard several of Maldonado's co-workers testify that they saw him shoot Juan Lopez twice in the chest and then turn and fire at another of his supervisors, Adrian Flores.

A man was shot to death outside a nightclub early Thursday, police said. Jose Maldonado Aguirre, 30, of Anaheim was killed about 2 a.m. as he left In Cahoots on South Lemon Street, Police Lt. Geoff Spalding said. Aguirre died at the scene from multiple wounds. His assailant remains at large, and police said they are still trying to establish a motive.

A Logan Heights man who shot and killed a 10-year-old girl while target shooting pleaded guilty Thursday in Superior Court to involuntary manslaughter. Jose Maldonado-Ruiz, 45, could receive four years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 27. Maldonado admitted he fired the Sept. 27 shot in his backyard that struck Sonia Cano in the chest while she was walking in an alley between 24th and 25th Streets near K Street while on her way to a market to buy eggs for her mother.

Jose Maldonado Gonzalez, the last president of Spain's Republican government in exile, died Monday of respiratory ailments at a hospital in this northern Spanish city. Maldonado was 85 and went to Mexico after the Spanish Republic was crushed by the late dictator Francisco Franco in the 1936-39 Civil War. There he succeeded Luis Jimenez de Asua as president of the Republican government-in-exile in 1970. The exiled government was a symbol of resistance to Franco.

A 14-month-old boy was critically hurt in Pacoima on Thursday when an alleged drunk driver hopped a curb and struck a heavy steel-mesh trash can that flew into a group of people waiting for a bus. The boy and his mother, who was also seriously injured, were flown to UCLA Medical Center. The hospital did not release information about their conditions. Another woman suffered minor injuries in the 5:25 p.m. accident and was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.

A 20-year-old North Hollywood gang member who shot at a group of guests at a birthday party, killing one man and wounding another, pleaded guilty Wednesday to voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder, prosecutors said. Stephen V. White entered the plea in San Fernando Superior Court. He will be sentenced to 19 years and four months in state prison next month, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Karen L. Parsons. The charges stem from the death of Jose Maldonado, 22, who was shot September 18, 1988.
