Men's Wearhouse Inc. is upping its bid to buy competitor Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, offering to pay some $1.6 billion for the men's apparel retailer. The two companies have been trading acquisition attempts, sparked by Jos. A. Bank's unsolicited move on Oct. 9 to purchase the much larger Men's Wearhouse for $48 a share, or roughly $2.3 billion. On Monday, Men's Wearhouse said it commenced a cash tender offer of $57.50 a share - a 38% premium over Jos. A. Bank's close on Oct. 8. Compared with Jos. A. Bank's Friday close of $54.41 a share, it's a 5.7% premium.

A month after parting ways with its founder, suit retailer Men's Wearhouse Inc. is executing a new strategy, buying designer Joseph Abboud's brands for $97.5 million in cash. The purchase of JA Holding Inc., which is majority-owned by funds affiliated with J.W. Childs Associates, gives Men's Wearhouse Inc. exclusive labels to sell in its stores. The strategy is popular among retailers such as J.C. Penney and Macy's, which tout the unique brands as a point of differentiation from rivals.

Models Chrissy Teigen and Hannah Davis were on hand, along with DJ Chelsea Leyland. Men's wear designer Joseph Abboud takes his cues from the classics, but breaks from tradition with size and texture. Named the men's wear designer of the year for 1990 by the Council of American Fashion Designers, Abboud recently spent a day at Gary & Co. in Newport Beach. Talking about his style, he says he designs men's clothes in soft, draped shapes, with jackets that are looser and easier fitting than classic men's wear. Giorgio Armani insured his star status at this week's presentation of the first Woolmark Awards for mens' fashion by sending Ali MacGraw to accept the honor in his place. Held at the Mens Fashion Assn. press preview in Rye Brook, N.Y., on Thursday, the awards, sponsored by the Wool Bureau, replace the Cutty Sark Menswear Awards. Last year, Buckingham Wile, owners of Cutty Sark, ended its 9-year stint as sponsors of the Oscar of menswear. The other five Woolmark Awards given at a ceremony, presented by Lena Horne and Douglas Fairbanks Jr., went to American designers Joseph Abboud, Bill Robinson and Ronaldus Shamask, London designer Paul Smith and to the Gap for its creative advertising campaign and for bringing fashion to the mass market.

American men who have frowned on fashion's fits of frolic for the past several years can rest easy. A new crop of designers are making names for themselves with menswear ideas that attempt to rationalize rather than revolutionize the way men dress. Taking their inspiration from the closets of American consumers, new designers--Joseph Abboud, M.W. Even before the starting gun had officially been fired on New York Fashion Week, Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte could be found doing laps in the deep end of the celebrity-meets-fashion pool. We first spotted him at the Joseph Abboud menswear show at the New York Public Library on Wednesday evening, where the Olympian joined a celebrity-stocked front row that included Kellan Lutz (he of the “Twilight” movies), Daniel Gilles ("Broken Kingdom," "Vampire Diaries") and the New York Rangers' Brad Richards.
