Former Blockbuster Entertainment Corp. President Joseph Baczko on Wednesday was named dean of Pace University's Lubin School of Business in New York. Baczko, 59, whose executive experience spans the nursery, video and toy industries, said in a release that he hoped his international business experience would contribute to the development of competitive educational programs at the school. The 40-year-old business school has 5,100 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

When the giant U.S. retail toy chain, Toys 'R' Us, unveiled an ambitious plan for operations in Japan at the beginning of the year, it made the challenge of penetrating this notoriously closed market look like child's play. What's required are big stores, and lots of them--maybe 100 over the next decade, the American toy strategists decided. The winning formula would combine drive-in convenience, economies of scale, low prices--and hamburgers. McDonald's Japan, which owns 20% of the Toys 'R' Us venture here, was to build adjoining restaurants.

Amid the rhetoric about the Japanese buying up America as they keep would-be business rivals out of Japan, U.S. trade officials recently have had some cause for cheer. Two highly regarded U.S. retailers have joined forces with Japanese counterparts in efforts to crack the tough-to-enter Japanese market. Toys R Us, the nation's largest toy merchant, is hooking up with McDonald's Co.
