Since Joseph Mahon decamped for north Orange County last year, the former Bastide chef has been busy. He started with a pop-up burger parlor, nights only, in a café in downtown Fullerton,  then opened a breakfast and lunch spot called Early Bird in August in the north part of town. Now he's nixed the pop-up, and Burger Parlor just opened as a freestanding restaurant in the thick of things downtown. He's got a bright breezy space outfitted with swirly glass lamps, a couple of sleek flat screen televisions and those silver metal chairs that were once Navy issue.

After more than 400 liftoffs, NASA launched its last unmanned space rocket from this spaceport today, propelling a $125-million Navy communications satellite into orbit. A 31-year era ended when an Atlas-Centaur rocket blazed away from the pad at 4:56 a.m. and hoisted a 5,100-pound payload intended to link land, sea and air forces around the globe with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the National Command Authority and the President's military command network.

Joseph Mahon, the last chef at the now shuttered Bastide in West Hollywood, has turned up in north Orange County, in Fullerton. At first, he was running a pop-up burger joint downtown. Now he's got himself a wide-awake spot on Bastanchury Road where he's packing in the locals in for breakfast and lunch. At Early Bird , he's serving up delicious egg dishes, griddle cakes and more in a big loft-like room washed in natural light. Families sit patiently waiting for a table. Waiters are warm, but somewhat overwhelmed by the crowd on the Saturday I stop in for brunch.

Recently, the British wine magazine Decanter reported on an initiative by the Bordeaux Wine Bureau ( CIVB ) to teach young kids (ages 6 to 10 or 11) the rudiments of winemaking and viticulture through a voluntary program called La Gironde Verte . They'll visit vineyards, learn how wine is made, taste the grapes, tour the cellar and interview the winemaker. There's even a textbook involved: "Mon Cahier des Vignes" (My Vine Workbook.) You can see it online - - in French, of course, but with charming graphics, maps and illustrations.

Goodbye, Eva: Eva chef-owner Mark Gold tells Eater LA that he has opted to sell his Beverly Street restaurant Eva to pursue an opportunity as a partner in a new Manhattan Beach restaurant. Permitting problems over parking spaces and its liquor license plagued Eva last year when Gold sought donations to offset the expenses of filing an appeal after the request for a variance was denied. "Although we will miss Eva ... it was time to find something bigger," Gold said of the decision to move on.  Early Bird's new chef: Speaking of moving on, Fullerton restaurant Early Bird announces that Frank DeLoach has succeeded Joseph Mahon as executive chef.
