The death of a Montebello man this week has been linked to injuries he received at the hands of Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies while being arrested, authorities said Thursday.

The man who died Monday after fighting with sheriff's deputies in South El Monte has been identified by the coroner's office as Joseph Ornelas, 25, of Pico Rivera. Ornelas stopped breathing and died after a 2:30 a.m. fight with two deputies who stopped him from stealing a truck in a convenience store parking lot at 1533 Peck Road, authorities said.

Hundreds of angry parents, teachers and students turned out Tuesday night at meetings in Santa Ana and Huntington Beach to protest what school officials described as the most severe budget cuts in the history of their school districts. About 250 people crowded the boardroom of the Santa Ana Unified School District, where trustees approved a recommendation to slash $9 million from the district's budget.

A year ago, sheriff's deputies assigned to the station in Temple City were in the media spotlight--for thefts, beatings, shootings and other alleged on-duty misconduct in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. Three former deputies who worked out of the Temple Station are in state prison for stealing credit cards from motorists. Another was fired after allegedly beating a suspect. Eighteen were named in civil lawsuits that cost the department more than $1 million to settle.
