"Scenic Route" begins with the promise of bone-crunching violence. Before a single image appears, we hear thuds, moans, fists against flesh. Two men finally emerge, their faces smeared with blood. First-time feature directors Kevin and Michael Goetz then show how two lifelong friends, preppy Mitchell (Josh Duhamel) and schlubby Carter (Dan Fogler), became stranded by the loneliest road in the American Southwest and broke each other's noses. Tempers initially flare when Carter, an unemployed writer, tries to convince his pal that his finance job and suburban house have led him astray.

Romantic comedies are usually all about what is keeping the couple apart ? the distance in "Sleepless in Seattle," the friendship in "When Harry Met Sally," the fiancé in "My Best Friend's Wedding. " In the likeable "Life as We Know It," starring Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, it's all about what's keeping them uncomfortably together. That would be a bottle-hugging, diaper-wearing, adorable moppet named Sophie, the baby they inherited after their best friends were killed in an accident.

"Safe Haven," the latest weepie from a Nicholas Sparks novel, takes close to two hours to get where it's going - the intersection of Lovers Lane and nowhere. Starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel, this sloppy sentimental journey is long on beauty shots, short on depth and seriously intent on tugging your heartstrings. Indeed, it demands you reach for those tissues. Sob. The real cause for tears is that Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallstrom finds himself in the Nicholas Sparks business these days.

Is Fergie warming up for the pressure that comes with choosing a baby name? The singer and wife to actor Josh Duhamel is now officially Fergie Duhamel, having changed her name from Stacy Ann Ferguson, TMZ reports . And why not? When was the last time anyone thought of her as "Stacy"? Scrambling to accommodate its Big Gulp of an ensemble cast, for which disaster movie maven Irwin Allen would've killed, "New Year's Eve" does for its holiday what last year's "Valentine's Day" did for Valentine's Day. If this one's a hit, as was "Valentine's Day" ($200 million worldwide), surely we can expect "Presidents Day. " With nice cameos for actual ex-presidents. As with "Valentine's Day," the template for director Garry Marshall and screenwriter Katherine Fugate is "Love, American Style" except some of the plotlines interconnect.

Nicholas Sparks is the king of the chick flick. Eight of his romance novels have now been adapted into films, the latest of which, "Safe Haven," hits theaters on Valentine's Day. But on the set of the film, director Lasse Hallström forbade cast and crew from describing the picture with that saccharine moniker. "For me, this is not a chick flick - that's a derogatory term for this genre,"  Hallström said at the premiere of the film Tuesday evening at the newly minted TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
