The Fair Derby has largely been dominated by a few veterans through the years at Costa Mesa Speedway. But Josh Larsen, a 29-year-old from Monrovia who has been riding at the Orange County Fairgrounds since 1988, delivered a breakthrough performance on Saturday. Larsen made a calculated move underneath Corona's Gary Hicks on the third of four laps, and came away with his first Fair Derby title.

Three years ago, Josh Larsen reached a fork in the road toward athletic success. Larsen was a junior at Newport Harbor High School, where he played goalie on the Sailors' perennially successful water polo team. "The coaches told me I could have gone to any college I wanted to," Larsen said. But Larsen also envisioned a career as a speedway motorcycle racer. He began racing junior speedway bikes when he was 7 and won consecutive national junior titles in 1986-87.

Motor Racing . Chris Manchester won the four-lap scratch main event Saturday in front of 3,220 in the weekly speedway motorcycle program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. Cypress' Charles Ermolemko was second and Josh Larsen of Newport Beach was third. Larsen won the eight-lap handicap main event.

Mike Faria of Apple Valley took first in the scratch main event Friday night in motorcycle racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Robert Pfetzing of Tustin Ranch took second, followed by Gary Hicks of Riverside, Josh Larsen from Balboa and Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa.

Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa won the four-lap scratch main event in the weekly speedway motorcycle program Friday at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Mike Faria was second, San Juan Capistrano's Brad Oxley third and Charlie Venegas of San Bernardino fourth. Robert Pfetzing of Tustin Ranch won the eight-lap handicap main event. Brea's Shawn McConnell was second, Garry Hicks of Riverside was third, Josh Larsen of Balboa was fourth and Faria was fifth.

Brad Oxley of San Clemente won the eight-lap handicap in front of 6,657 spectators in the weekly speedway program Friday at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. Steve Lucero of Riverside finished second, with Gary Hicks of Glen Avon third, Josh Larsen of Costa Mesa fourth and Craig Welkie of New Zealand fifth. Billy Hamill of Monrovia won the four-lap scratch main event with Alan Christian of Murietta second.

Team Faria won the special event speedway motorcycle team race Friday night at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Team Faria included Mike Faria, Shawn McConnell, Josh Larsen, Scott Brant, Steve Lucero, Jessee Finch and Brent Warner. Chris Manchester of Hesperia won the eight-lap handicap main event. There was no scratch main race because of the team racing.
