Josh Shaw could be returning to cornerback for USC. Interim Coach Ed Orgeron said Sunday that he and defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast probably would discuss moving the 6-foot-1 Shaw from safety again to help the Trojans' pass defense. In 2012, Shaw started the final seven games at cornerback. He has started four games at cornerback this season. During USC's 14-10 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday, Fighting Irish quarterback Tommy Rees completed 14 of 21 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns before he was forced to leave the game because of a neck strain.

Kevon Seymour finished the 2013 season in style. The USC cornerback was selected defensive player of the game in the Las Vegas Bowl after deflecting a pass and making seven tackles in the Trojans' rout of Fresno State. The 6-foot, 175-pound junior from Pasadena built on the performance during the off-season and has been playing with a veteran confidence throughout spring practice. Seymour started on the left side last season, but with senior Josh Shaw sidelined while recovering from a stress fracture he also has played on the right.

USC cornerback Josh Shaw was not shy about gesturing to fans during USC's 31-14 victory over Oregon State on Friday night at Reser Stadium. "I really wanted the DBs to just step up to the challenge," Shaw said on the field after the game. "So I kind of wanted to come out here and be the guy that set the tempo, just hoping they would feed off me. " Shaw intercepted a pass by Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion in the end zone to thwart a first-half threat. He then watched as safety Dion Bailey and cornerback Kevon Seymour intercept passes in the fourth quarter.

USC again switched Josh Shaw from safety to cornerback, and the move paid immediate dividends in the Trojans' 19-3 victory over Utah on Saturday at the Coliseum. Shaw's first-quarter interception of a pass thrown by Utah quarterback Travis Wilson set up the Trojans' only touchdown. Shaw, a junior, started the season opener at safety, moved to cornerback for four games and started the last two games at safety. Shaw said he felt confident at cornerback. "I told the coaches before the game, 'Don't worry about the right side," Shaw said.

USC safety Josh Shaw got a surprise when he walked into the McKay Center this week. Hanging on his shoulder pads inside his locker was jersey No. 6. "I started jumping up and down," Shaw said Wednesday. Shaw, a transfer from Florida in spring 2012, wore No. 26 last season and in this season's first game. He requested the change to No. 6 last spring. The single digit holds special significance for Shaw because of his relationship with former Trojans safety T.J. McDonald.

He took a handoff from quarterback Matt Barkley, and ran to his left but appeared to be stopped at the line of scrimmage.

Until a few weeks ago, USC's secondary was derided as perhaps the Trojans' weakest link. But going into next Saturday's game at California, the unit continues to show noteworthy improvement. USC defensive backs intercepted three passes Friday in the Trojans' 31-14 victory over Oregon State, which entered the game as college football's most productive passing offense. It was the second week in a row that USC picked off three passes, raising its season interception total to 13. The Trojans were ranked eighth nationally in interceptions going into Saturday's games.

Ed Orgeron spoke with USC Athletic Director Pat Haden after the Trojans' loss to UCLA, but the interim coach said Sunday the subject was the game - not his future. Orgeron, who would like to become the Trojans' permanent coach, said no meeting with Haden had been scheduled. "We just talked about going ahead and recruiting, going ahead and doing what I need to do," Orgeron said during a teleconference with reporters. "He'll talk to me when he's ready, I'm sure. " With Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin agreeing to a contract extension, USC could pursue coaches such as Vanderbilt's James Franklin , Boise State's Chris Petersen and, perhaps, Washington's Steve Sarkisian . Jack Del Rio , the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator and interim head coach, was interviewed by Haden in November.

A berth in a Bowl Championship Series bowl game is not at stake. Nor is a chance to play for the Pac-12 Conference title. But the outcome of the 83rd game between No. 22 UCLA and No. 23 USC on Saturday at the Coliseum could have a dramatic impact on both programs. USC, 9-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play, is riding a wave of "Coach O" hysteria. UCLA (8-3, 5-3) is going for a second consecutive win over the Trojans under Coach Jim Mora. At USC, interim Coach Ed Orgeron has captivated players, assistant coaches, fans and recruits while leading the Trojans to a 6-1 record since replacing the fired Lane Kiffin.
