As darkness falls over Santa Monica Boulevard near Plummer Park in West Hollywood, a group of young male prostitutes hovers near a street corner, eyeing two sheriff's cars parked across the street. As soon as the deputies disappear, the young men emerge from the shadows, cross the street and form a cluster on a patch of grass. A few minutes later, a lanky man in his early 20s addresses the group, which has assembled for the fifth unofficial meeting of SMASH--the Santa Monica Assn.

Despite a late surge by Marina, Foothill held on to beat the Vikings, 7-6, in nonleague girls' water polo Wednesday. The Vikings, who upset Capistrano Valley on Tuesday, could not contain Foothill freshmen Brittany Hayes, who scored four goals, and Gabby Dominque, who had two. UCLA Coach Ben Howland, when asked about Texas' basketball team, had an immediate assessment. "J'Covan Brown is as good a guy as we've seen, and that includes Kansas and Michigan," Howland said. The Bruins (2-4) host the Longhorns (4-2) on Saturday at the Sports Arena. Stopping Brown, who averages 20.3 points and 4.8 rebounds, will be critical for UCLA. The Bruins and Longhorns played dramatic games in 2007 and 2008, and both times Texas won. In 2007, when UCLA was ranked either No. 1 or 2 in most polls, Damion James had a dunk with 8.3 seconds left to give Texas a 63-61 upset at Pauley Pavilion.

I just wanna rock 'n' roll all night and party ever-ee-day, and judging by the action in Clubland these daze, I believe I'm in the majority. My feet felt a wee bit lighter after hitting up the El Rey Theatre on Saturday for a powerful punch of rock en espanol sponsored by La Banda Elastica magazine. From a giant mariachi player to an Azteca sun, colorful, clever art pieces trucked in by the Illegal Interns set a groovy mood.

UCLA is traveling hundreds of miles this season to play home games. It's 20 feet 4 inches that worries the Bruins' opponents. That's the combined height of the Pacific 12 Conference's most imposing starting frontcourt, a 775-pound blend of brawn and finesse that features 6-10 and 6-8 forwards who put up three-point shots and a 6-10, 305-pound center who gobbles points and rebounds, among other things. "To me, it's the difference between them and everybody else," Arizona Coach Sean Miller said.

As usual, Orange County rock musicians will play a raft of holiday charity shows, with five benefit concerts scheduled in the next 10 days. But Orange County Music for the Needy, the most ambitious of the annual benefits, at least in scope, will not be staged again. "It really makes me feel bad," said Jim Palmer, the music entrepreneur who had been the driving force behind Music for the Needy during its 5-year run.
