What kind of Duck is Oregon sophomore tight end Josh Wilcox? An odd Duck? A wild Duck? A daffy Duck? He's certainly no dead Duck, not the way he has been acting lately. Start with the new tattoo on his left biceps. The artwork is of a skull with a rose in its mouth. Above the skull are the words "Rose Bowl," and beneath it is "95." It's a pretty great tattoo. "That's what a lot of people thought," Wilcox said. "Except my mother." And she learned about it by reading the newspaper.

USC's Traveler IV and Texas Tech's Two Bar Boy were not the only mounted mascots roaming the sidelines during Monday's bowlfest. Renegade, with Chief Ocseola aboard, led Florida State's pep squad in the Sugar Bowl. Florida wisely did not try to match its state rival by having a mascot ride an alligator. QUOTEWORTHY "It was hard to stop." --Zach Thomas, Texas Tech's All-Southwestern Conference linebacker, after facing USC's offense. "Maybe I'll go home and ask for a raise."

This time, Oregon made sure California's comeback wasn't successful. Tony Graziani threw three touchdown passes to Josh Wilcox, and No. 15 Oregon answered Cal's late rally with one of its own in a 52-30 victory Saturday. "They kept scoring and so did we," Graziani said. The victory was the 11th in 12 league games for Oregon, 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10, and ended a three-game losing streak in Berkeley.

Calvin Branch never considered himself a second-string player. So when it looked as if he would be backing up Troy Davis at Iowa State, he went elsewhere. And his decision to transfer to Colorado State never looked better than it did Wednesday when Branch ran for 77 yards and two touchdowns and was honored as the most valuable player in the Blue's 44-34 victory in the Blue-Gray Classic. "When we came out of spring practice in 1995, coaches were saying Troy and I were No.

In addition to dropped passes (six) and a premature departure from its running game Saturday, there were some lapses in USC's young defensive backfield in Saturday's 22-7 loss to Oregon. Trojan defensive coordinator Don Lindsey pointed to two big Oregon plays, a 49-yard touchdown run by Dino Philyaw and a 71-yard Tony Graziani-to-Josh Wilcox pass play. "On the 71-yard play, the guy catches the ball seven yards beyond the line of scrimmage," Lindsey said.

Ricky Whittle scored two touchdowns, the second a game-winning fourth-quarter 15-yard run, as Oregon rallied for a 27-20 victory over Utah on Saturday night. Whittle, who broke around the right end to score untouched with 10:58 remaining to cap a 73-yard, 14-play drive, also scored in the first period on a five-yard pass from Tony Graziani.

Oregon won the game but lost its leader. Tony Graziani, the Ducks' senior quarterback, left the game with a knee injury Saturday as Oregon beat Nevada, 44-30, in an offensive shootout at Eugene, Ore. The Ducks (2-0) lost both Graziani and star defensive back Kenny Wheaton in the second quarter. But back-up quarterback Ryan Perry-Smith and tailbacks Jerry Brown and Saladin McCullough kept the offense moving against the Wolf Pack, a Big West team playing its first Pacific 10 opponent since 1947.

The Rose Bowl game between Penn State and Oregon will be played on Monday, Jan. 2, in keeping with the Tournament of Roses Assn.'s "Never on Sunday" policy for its New Year's parade and football game. The tradition dates to 1893, when officials feared that the parade would frighten horses tethered outside Pasadena churches and perhaps disturb worship services. This will be the 16th time the festivities will be held the day after New Year's Day. * Add Jan.

Silila Malepeai is one big Duck--5-foot-11, 265 pounds. But, on Thursday afternoon, he turned into one big chicken. Malepeai was one of three Oregon Ducks football players judging a duck-calling contest at Universal Studios when Rocky, a real duck, suddenly bolted off the chair next to him. A startled Malepeai immediately got off his seat. Asked later about his nerves, the senior nose tackle didn't duck the issue: "I didn't want the duck to go wild on me," he said.
