A Joshua Tree man pleaded guilty Friday to a federal charge of possessing child pornography after FBI agents monitored Internet chat rooms he frequented to trade and distribute the images, officials said. Gordon Douglas Cope, 58, previously was convicted of attempted sexual assault on a child. He will face from 10 to 20 years in federal prison when sentenced July 10 in U.S. District court in Los Angeles.

Air rescue officials spotted the wreckage of a single-engine plane Thursday afternoon that crashed on a mountain near Joshua Tree, Calif., killing at least one person. Officials believe the small aircraft may be a plane reported missing out of Big Bear City this week.

You never know what's going to turn up in the desert. I'm not just talking about the cactuses and jumbled boulders of Joshua Tree National Park, though they seduce rock climbers by the thousands and were part of what motivated me to make the 150-mile drive here from L.A. The weirdness of the desert was an attraction too, from the local radio ads for a mail-order "herbal breast enhancement" formula to the horse hitched to a post at the Joshua Tree gas station.

The line of hikers snaked up the side of the mountain, everyone cautiously following the leader over rugged, rocky terrain. It reminded me of a fourth-grade field trip, but Mrs. Brennan's class was never like this. "Dar, did you see this one?" a hiker called out, pointing at the ground. "No, let me look," ranger Dar Spearing replied, hurrying back down the mountain to the hiker's side and crouching on the ground with an intent expression on his face.
