Tim McGraw "Southern Voice" (Curb Records) . ½ Tim McGraw sharply criticized Curb Records about this time last year for issuing a third "greatest hits" collection from the country star rather than release this album, which sat on a shelf for nearly two years after it was completed. McGraw sees this, his 10th studio effort, as a way of reclaiming his voice, and bucking the powers that be might well be one facet of that voice. If only more of that feistiness were evident in the songs he's selected.

It doesn't take long for a meeting with Joss Stone to descend into the surreal. There she is, on a sofa in a Midtown recording studio lounge, watching music videos, chatting about her unlikely career as a soul singer, when her attention gets distracted ... by her own voice. "Look, look, look," she says. "Oh, my God!"

Thanks to a headstrong new album that finally proves Joss Stone can do more than mimic African American women three times her age, 2007 was supposed to be the 20-year-old English soul singer's year. Unfortunately for Stone, nobody told Amy Winehouse, whose "Back to Black" has handily displaced "Introducing Joss Stone" as the U.K. R&B disc of the moment.

After reading and seeing Nellie McKay perform, Robert Hilburn's review is right on ("Young Singer, Old Soul," Feb. 29). How she stylizes a song, be it rap, jazz or pop, illustrates that her singing maturity is well beyond her 19 years. Like Joss Stone, she sings from the heart and puts her point across slyly, almost unknowingly, but always directly on target. Nellie will be a force to reckon with soon on the music scene. Glad she skipped "American Idol 2" and made it on her own. Go, Nellie.

On a recent summer day at the Paramount lot, the five members of the group SuperHeavy played along to a recording of their first single, "Miracle Worker," as a camera crane swooped over an assembled crowd of a few hundred and the music boomed. Onstage in the middle of the lot's faux urban streetscape, Mick Jagger lipped the words and moved like himself while the big crowd bounced along to an upbeat, dance hall-inspired pop song. Budgets being what they are, it's not often that a music video in 2011 features a few hundred extras.

After winning nine Tony Awards Sunday night, including the one for best musical, "The Book of Mormon" got more good news Wednesday: Its cast album ranked No. 3 on the U.S. sales charts last week. It was the highest-charting Broadway cast album — and first top 10 — since 1969, when "Hair" spent 13 weeks at No. 1, Billboard reported. The Broadway album sold 61,000 units during the week that ended Sunday — a paltry figure compared, say, with the more than 1.1. million that Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" sold two weeks ago, but Billboard said it marked the largest sales week for any cast album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991, the previous record having been 54,000 for "Phantom of the Opera" in 1992.

Joss Stone sometimes has trouble standing tough onstage. The reason she gets wobbly? Stage fright. The 19-year-old singer and songwriter, whose third album, "Introducing Joss Stone," makes its American chart debut on Wednesday, learned a few years ago that the best way to avoid a crowd's scrutiny is to avert your gaze. "I close my eyes a lot," Stone said recently as she unwound after taping a promotional appearance at a Burbank soundstage.
