Pitcher Ann Van Dortrecht and third baseman Joy Tiner of Cal State Fullerton have been named to the second team of the NCAA All-American softball team. Two former Orange County high school standouts were selected to the first team, as chosen in a vote of NCAA Division I coaches. California's Michele Granger, a pitcher from Valencia High School, and Fresno State's Martha Noffsinger, a shortstop from Edison, were chosen.

Joy Tiner's post-high-school softball career has gone much like a series of checked swings--just as she's ready to get started, something comes up that brings her game to an abrupt halt. First, it was homesickness, which prompted Tiner to leave Bakersfield City College after two weeks in the fall of 1986 and return to her native Bishop, where she worked as a checkout clerk for one year after high school.

Four Cal State Fullerton softball players--pitcher Ann Van Dortrecht, third baseman Joy Tiner, outfielder Mich DeBree and designated hitter Carey Hess--have been named to the All-Big West Conference first team. Van Dortrecht (28-10) has a conference-leading 0.44 earned-run average and 211 strikeouts. Tiner is the Titans' leading hitter with a .313 average, 10 doubles and 15 runs batted in. DeBree is batting .291 with 17 RBIs, and Hess is hitting .

The Cal State Fullerton softball team won its seventh consecutive game, defeating Kent State, 1-0, in the first round of the Pony tournament Wednesday at Fullerton. The Titans, 25-7 and seventh-ranked nationally, won the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Joy Tiner doubled and scored on Jill Matyuch's single. Tiffany Boyd (14-2), a transfer from UCLA, won her fourth consecutive game, a one-hitter. She struck out a season-high 10.

Tiffany Boyd of Cal State Fullerton and Terry Carpenter of Fresno State have been selected as the Big West Conference co-pitchers of the year. Boyd, a sophomore right-hander who graduated from Woodbridge High School and transferred from UCLA, posted an ERA of 0.63, and has a conference-leading 31 victories, 16 shutouts, and 222 strikeouts. Carpenter, a graduate of Edison High School, is 24-2 and leads the conference with an earned-run average of 0.30.

Two Cal State Fullerton pitchers recorded shutouts on Sunday as the Titans swept a Big West Conference softball doubleheader from San Jose State at Fullerton. Ann Van Dortrecht pitched her conference-leading 12th shutout as Fullerton won, 1-0. It was Shireen Campbell's turn in the second game as the Titans won again, 1-0. Van Dortrecht allowed four hits and had four strikeouts.

Tiffany Boyd pitched a no-hitter and a three-hitter as Cal State Fullerton swept a nonconference softball doubleheader with Cal Poly Pomona Thursday at Pomona. Boyd's no-hitter helped Fullerton (32-5) to a 4-0 victory in the first game. The fourth-ranked Titans had to go 10 innings in the second game to win, 4-1. Boyd improves to 19-2.

Saddleback College's John Waldrup shot a two-under-par 70 and had a hole in one, to lead Saddleback to an Orange Empire Conference victory at Torrey Pines Monday. Waldrup, the conference player of the year, has averaged 71.8 strokes this season. Saddleback finished at 367, defeating San Diego (382), Palomar (396) and San Diego City (398).

Joy Tiner's bases-loaded double in the first inning scored three runs to help Saddleback College to a 4-1 victory over San Bernardino Valley on Wednesday in a Southern California Regional softball playoff game at Saddleback. Tiner also tripled, and Debbie Hartwig added an RBI single in the second for Saddleback (34-4). Patti Taylor (33-3) pitched a 4-hitter with 14 strikeouts for Saddleback, the defending state champion.

The Cal State Fullerton softball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and will play host to Cal State Long Beach in a best-of-three series this weekend. The Titans (44-21) and 49ers (45-16) will play on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 1 p.m. If necessary, the third game will follow the second on Saturday. The series winner advances to the College World Series, May 23-27 at Oklahoma City.
