It looks like that conversation Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro had with free agent J.R. Smith didn't go that great after all. Smith tweeted Friday that he's joining the New York Knicks, no doubt spurred on by the Knicks' current seven-game winning streak and Jeremy Lin's sudden rise to budding NBA star. Smith, who was being courted by several NBA teams, including the Clippers and Lakers, tweeted , "New York it is!" even though the Knicks say that no deal is in place.

An untidy mess It's been such an upside-down season for the New York Knicks that Metta World Peace might represent the voice of reason. Andrea Bargnani has shown a disdain for shot clocks, Coach Mike Woodson has stashed one too many timeouts in his back pocket and now J.R. Smith has become the shoelace bandit. The NBA fined the continually wayward guard $50,000 on Wednesday after Smith unsuccessfully tried to untie the shoelace of Detroit Pistons center Greg Monroe while standing at the free-throw line.

J.R. Smith has the ability to drive Denver Coach George Karl insane. How crazy? "Love him," Karl said after Smith drove the Lakers crazy with 24 points, four assists, two steals and his usual trash-talking ways during Denver's 120-101 victory in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals Monday night at the Pepsi Center. Karl paused for about two seconds and smiled. "And I hate him," Karl said affectionately about the wild, combustible Smith.

J.R. Smith, the Knicks' high-flying and high-scoring reserve guard, has been suspended five games by the NBA for violating the league's anti-drug policy, it was announced Friday. Smith, who was the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year last season after averaging 18.1 points a game, is rehabilitating his left knee after surgery to repair the patella tendon and lateral meniscus. He will be suspended without pay for first five games once he's activated in November or December. Ron Klempner, the NBA players' union chief executive, released a statement but did not specify what the drug violation was for or whether Smith planned to appeal.

The Lakers have joined the race for free agent J.R. Smith , a forward-guard who could solve two problems at once for them. Smith would help at small forward and also provide backup support for Kobe Bryant at shooting guard. Smith, 26, has played in China since the NBA season began. He signed with a Chinese pro team during the NBA lockout and was forced to honor the contract until this month. There are plenty of hurdles for the Lakers here. Because the Lakers were well over the salary cap and spent their mini-mid-level exception on Josh McRoberts , they can offer Smith only the comparatively small salary of about $450,000, the prorated portion of the veterans' minimum.

The Clippers, still not done dealing after signing Kenyon Martin on Friday, will pursue guard J.R. Smith after the team he plays on in the Chinese Basketball Assn. finishes its season and he becomes eligible to play in the NBA, said a person not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. The Clippers aren't getting enough production off the bench behind small forward Caron Butler and feel as if Smith can provide the team with a big scoring punch at the position, the person said.

J.R. Smith of the New York Knicks will be honored as the NBA's sixth man of the year instead of the Clippers' Jamal Crawford, according to a number of reports citing league sources. Early in the season, it was apparent that the Clippers' high-scoring acquisition was the front-runner for the award as he helped the team vault to the top of the NBA standings and eventually finish with a 56-26 record and their first Pacific Division title. Crawford, a 13-year veteran known for his variety of crossover moves and instant offense, finished the regular season averaging 16.5 points, 2.5 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 29 minutes a game.

J.R. Smith sank a baseline 21-footer at the buzzer after a Phoenix turnover with a second to play, giving the depleted New York Knicks a 99-97 victory over the host Suns on Wednesday night. Smith's tough jumper from 15 feet had tied it at 97 with 10.6 seconds left. Then, after the turnover, Jason Kidd inbounded to Smith, who got the shot off as he sailed toward the out-of-bounds line. Smith scored 27 and Kidd added 23. Jared Dudley had a career-high 36 points for Phoenix, including two free throws that put the Suns ahead 97-95 with 34.5 seconds to go. New York was without the NBA's No. 2 scorer Carmelo Anthony (hyperextended knee)
