Huge Development Reported for Taiwan: JTL International Corp. said it will build a $740-million, 790-acre resort in Taitung, about 150 miles southeast of Taipei, according to Associated Press. The resort will include a theme park, an arts center, a golf course and at least one hotel and shopping mall, AP said. It said JTL is based in Los Angeles and quoted JTL President Daniel Yee as saying that the project will involve Taiwanese, Japanese and American investors.

A businessman from mainland China walked gingerly into the Monterey Park branch of General Bank one recent day and asked to see the manager. He wanted to know if the institution had any ties to the Beijing government. None, he was assured. The man deposited $10,000 on the spot--and returned the next day to deposit another $900,000 by wire transfer, satisfied that his transactions at the Taiwanese community bank would be kept confidential from Chinese authorities.
