In arguably one of the biggest trades in the franchise's short history, Chivas USA on Thursday acquired striker Juan Agudelo from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for defender Heath Pearce and allocation money. Moments later, Chivas announced another deal, sending midfielder Michael Lahoud and allocation money to Philadelphia in exchange for Union defender Danny Califf. Agudelo, a 19-year-old rising star with the U.S. national team, has six goals in 33 matches with the Red Bulls over the last three seasons.

Having just spent his monthlong winter camp working with domestic players, U.S. national team Coach Juergen Klinsmann called up a team of primarily foreign-based players for next week's friendly against the Ukraine in Cyprus. The game, to be played on the last FIFA match day before preliminary World Cup rosters are due in May, is widely seen as a final audition for several players on the fringes of the U.S. team for Brazil. “You want to give them a chance to show where they are at and what's going on in their specific situation,” Klinsmann said.

Chivas USA has undergone more alterations than Kirstie Alley's wardrobe in its eight seasons as a Major League Soccer franchise. Chivas got its latest new era off to a noteworthy start Saturday with a 1-0 win over the Galaxy before an announced crowd of 18,800 at the Home Depot Center. The win was noteworthy in part because it was the first for Chivas against its stadium roommate since 2007 and just the sixth in 23 meetings overall, vaulting Chivas over the defending MLS champions in the Western Conference standings.

Chivas USA tonight VS. COLUMBUS When: 7:30. Where : Home Depot Center. On the air: None. Records: Season opener. Record vs. Crew (2012): 0-1. Update: Chivas USA begins a new era with one certainty: It can't be any worse than the old era. The team failed to win any of its final 14 games last season, when its average home attendance fell to a league and franchise low of 13,056. So new ownership cleaned house, remade the roster and handed the team over to former Mexican League coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola, who guided Chivas through an unbeaten preseason.

Chivas USA, seven points out of a postseason berth with seven games to play, made an attempt at bolstering its playoff run Wednesday when it acquired New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph. A four-time Major League Soccer all-star, Joseph will be counted on to jump-start an offense that ranks last in the league with 14 goals in 20 games. “He has been one the most consistent players in this league," Chivas General Manager Jose Domene said. "He brings his experience and he will help us make that final push for the playoffs and hopefully MLS Cup.” To get the 34-year-old Joseph, who has one goal and three assists in 18 games in this season, Chivas sent midfielder Blair Gavin, a SuperDraft second-round pick in 2013, and undisclosed allocation money to New England.

Galaxy defenders Omar Gonzalez and A.J. De La Garza were among 25 players called into this week's training camp for the U.S. soccer team, but Galaxy captain Landon Donovan was not on the list, making it unlikely the national team's all-time leading scorer will play in the opening match of the final round of World Cup qualifying next month in Honduras. Also invited to camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson was Chivas USA striker Juan Agudelo and former Galaxy forward Edson Buddle, who was traded to the Colorado Rapids last month.

Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who is having a spectacular season for Chivas USA, was named Sunday to Major League Soccer's roster for next week's midseason All-Star game against Champions League winner Chelsea at PPL Park outside Philadelphia. Kennedy's goals-against average of 1.06 is the second lowest in the league for a regular keeper. He also has five shutouts and hasn't given up a goal in his last 228 minutes of MLS play. Kennedy will be joined on the team by Galaxy midfielders David Beckham and Landon Donovan, who are both coming off big efforts in the team's win Saturday at Portland.

Chivas USA hasn't made it to Major League Soccer's postseason since 2009. So when the team took the field against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday at the Home Depot Center it was in a familiar place: 10 points out of a playoff berth with 12 games to play. (For results of Saturday's game, go to latimes.com.) "We'd love to not be in this spot. We'd like to be at the top looking back at the rest who are trying to catch up," Coach Robin Fraser said. "But you are where you are. Rather than thinking about a lot of other things, really we just focus on each game.

Robbie Rogers, a former winger with the U.S. national team who played prep soccer at Mater Dei High, said Friday he was stepping away from the sport after revealing that he is gay. In the final analysis, Rogers said, he had to choose between being himself and being a soccer player. He chose to be himself. "I always thought I could hide this secret," Rogers, 25, wrote in a powerful post on his blog . "Football was my escape, my purpose, my identity. Football hid my secret, gave me more joy than I could ever have imagined .... "Now is my time to step away.

Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara, who assumed full control of Chivas USA on Wednesday night, apparently didn't wait long to make his first move. Sources close to the team and Major League Soccer say  General Manager Jose Domene was dismissed Thursday. And that's not likely to be Vergara's only move. Although Coach Robin Fraser is said to be safe for the moment, Vergara isn't known to be patient with his managers, having gone through 16 in 10 seasons with Chivas of Guadalajara, the Mexican league club he owns.

Chivas USA's postseason chances may have gone from longshot to no shot Saturday at the Home Depot Center, and not simply because their loss to the Seattle Sounders left them at them 10 points out of the final playoff berth with 11 games to play. It was more how they lost: by giving up a franchise-record six goals in a 6-2 pummeling. And just to make sure everyone got the message, Chivas scored Seattle's final goal itself, with veteran defender Ante Jazic redirecting a pass around keeper Dan Kennedy in stoppage time.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he isn't concerned about the "little torn rotator cuff" in his right arm. "I'm good. It's OK, just sore," he said when asked about the injury. "I have a little torn rotator cuff. That doesn't heal. We just have to hope it doesn't tear the rest of the way," he said, laughing. Roethlisberger's injury occurred in the Steelers' Nov. 6 loss to Baltimore. He mentioned it in the spring, but this is the first time he has publicly called it a rotator cuff tear.
