A former British Olympian charged with masterminding a massive steroid-smuggling ring was released from custody Friday after bail was posted in the form of $740,000 in property pledges. U.S. District Judge J. Lawrence Irving allowed David Jenkins, 35, now living in Oceanside, to be freed on $740,000 bail secured by property pledged by his father, wife and in-laws, Assistant U.S. Atty. Phil Halpern said.

A man who said he was a business associate of Panamanian strongman Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega was charged with tax fraud Wednesday for running a Tijuana laboratory that allegedly produced millions of dollars worth of illegal steroids. Noriega is believed to be the main owner of Laboratorios Milano and could be prosecuted in the United States on charges related to the production of the illegal body-building drugs, a U. S. prosecutor said.

David A. Jenkins, Olympic medalist and one-time golden boy of British track-and-field, was sentenced to seven years in jail Monday for conspiring to produce steroids in Tijuana, smuggle them across the border and distribute the drugs in the United States under fake labels. Jenkins, who had been free on bail, asked for a monthlong reprieve to attend to business matters at his vitamin-packaging concern in Oceanside. But U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Irving ordered him jailed immediately.
