Judd Granzow slaps a hand into a palm and taps at his temple with both hands. His blue eyes widen as a geyser of emotion spews from his 6-foot-4, 240-pound body. Granzow speaks about motivation, positive energy and goals. He talks a lot about doors, mostly the ones he expects to swing open without his even having to knock. "Doors will open for me, I know," Granzow said. "I know it's going to happen. I'm not going to try and open any doors. They'll open for me." His fingers again tap at his brow.

Well, listen to a story 'bout a man named Judd. . . . He struck it rich, in a manner of speaking, near the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains, gaining a foothold in big-time college football. Drawl ball. The school of hard Knoxville. Tennessee, that is. Judd Granzow, laid-back California kid and former fourth-round draft pick of the Dodgers, fits right in with the Volunteers, who are unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press and BCS polls.

Before a single question was lobbed his way, Judd Granzow was poised in the launching position, ready to swing away. "Before we start, I'd like to make a few comments about my school." You mean Faith Baptist, where your graduating class will be all of 40 seniors? The Canoga Park private school that kept your prodigious talent out of sight, out of mind until this year? You figure Judd wants to sling some mud, take a healthy rip, a parting shot.
