Not sure who you expected to get sent home on "The Voice" this week, as the Top 8 got whittled down to the Top 6. Sarah Simmons was on my list. Judith Hill wasn't. Both were eliminated on Tuesday night in what was, at first glance, at least half a shocker. Certainly Adam Levine, whose team both singers were on, was pretty stunned. "What?" he mouthed to Shakira, whose sole remaining team member, Sasha Allen, Levine had tossed over in favor of Hill during the Battle Rounds. Allen made the Top 6, as did Usher's only singer, Michelle Chamuel.

Most viewers probably didn't even catch it when Adam Levine's voice piped up at the end of "The Voice" elimination show on Tuesday night to declare, "I hate this country. " After all, it was a throwaway line that arrived (off camera) at a pretty tense moment. While one of the "Voice" coach's team members, Amber Carrington, had just been snatched from the brink of being sent home by voters, the fates of his other two talented singers, Judith Hill and Sarah Simmons, still hung in the balance.

Adam Levine was feeling the stress of having some of his team members eliminated from "The Voice" on Tuesday night when he muttered a comment, "I hate this country," which immediately lit up the Internet outrage machine. The Maroon 5 singer and "Voice" coach saw two of his team members -- Judith Hill and Sarah Simmons -- eliminated from the program as the result of public voting, but it was the comment that really seemed to grab the attention of the viewing audience. Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich tweeted , "Hey @adamlevine, why don't you ask the Dixie Chicks how "hating America" turned out for them.

"The Voice" stepped out for its first live show of the season on Monday night, when the members of Teams Adam and Usher took the stage to compete for next week's top 12. Viewers will vote to put through two singers from each team of four, then each coach will choose one of his or her two remaining team members to put through as well. Teams Blake and Shakira will perform on Tuesday night (yes, another two-hour show), then we'll get results in a special one-hour show on Wednesday. As the coaches kept telling us, the live performances often mark the moment when some singers start to shine, and others fade.

On Monday night, "The Voice" marked Memorial Day with a campfire, a porch swing, bedazzled cowboy boots and Blake Shelton's country-boy tribute song, "Boys 'Round Here," an appealing slice of American cheese if ever there was one.  It also brought us more showstopper performances as the Top 8 - three singers each from Teams Adam and Blake, and one each from Teams Shakira and Usher - did their best to keep their dreams alive for one more week....

Are you ready for the postmodernist cookbook? Two new releases--"The Best American Recipes 1999" (Houghton Mifflin, $26) and "Best of the Best" (Food & Wine Books, $29.95) are composed entirely of recipes lifted from other cookbooks (in the case of the first, newspapers, magazines and Web sites as well). These are the publishing equivalent of those "Hooray for Hollywood!" cinema compilations--movies made up of clips from other movies.

The Sundance Film Festival is poised to see its first acquisition, with Weinstein Co.'s VOD label Radius hammering out final details on a deal to buy the backup-singer documentary "Twenty Feet From Stardom," according to a person familiar with the negotiations who was not authorized to talk about them publicly. Directed by Morgan Neville, the film centers on the musically talented but, well, unsung world of backup vocalists, spotlighting the voices that helped make songs such as "Gimme Shelter" enduring hits.

Things are moving quickly on "The Voice" this season, and on Monday, it was on to the Battle Rounds, when the coaches pair up singers from their teams for competitive duets on a stage that looks like a boxing ring. In this phase, the coaches are both mentor, helping shape the singers' performances, and judge, picking one vocalist to progress to the next phase in the competition and sending the other home - unless another coach rescues the eliminated contestant with a "steal. " Each coach gets two steals per season, and on Monday, Shakira used up all two of hers, snagging both discarded contestants from Team Adam.
