As a longtime, but intermittent, IHOP customer, I wonder what Julia Stewart can do that other chief executives haven't already tried ("Short-Order CEO," by Matthew Heller, Aug. 7). I've had meals from IHOP restaurants up and down the Pacific Coast, and except for the breakfasts, find the food and service remarkably inconsistent and not as good a value as at some competitors. I will be watching (and tasting) very closely to see what she can do. Roger Hansen Orange

Unless you've never seen a menu with 15 varieties of pancakes before, a meal at an International House of Pancakes restaurant may not be exactly a jaw-dropping experience. For 47 years, IHOP--which originated in Toluca Lake--has served guests dependably, if not spectacularly, growing into a chain of more than 1,200 restaurants that did $1.8 billion in sales last year.

Stewart, a restaurant industry veteran who likes to tinker with menus and use zippy ad campaigns to boost business, is the heir-apparent to head IHOP Corp., which runs the International House of Pancakes chain. Analysts say that may be just what the Glendale company needs. Although IHOP is on solid financial footing, analysts say its menu could use some beefing up as it attempts to lure more customers for lunch and dinner, its best hope for boosting sales.

IHOP Corp., the operator of more than 1,300 restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, plans to license some of its products to supermarkets and other retailers. The Glendale-based company is in final negotiations with a vendor to license its products in the U.S. this year to test their appeal, Chief Executive Julia Stewart said. She did not specify what items may be licensed.

Former IHOP Corp. Chief Operating Officer Dennis Farrow sued the U.S. restaurant company, claiming he was fired Jan. 14 without severance after refusing a demotion. Farrow joined Glendale-based IHOP in September 2006 from rival Wendy's International Inc. IHOP Chief Executive Julia Stewart led him to believe that he would become president, Farrow said. Stewart eliminated his position last year, according to the complaint.

Shares of IHOP Corp. rose after the largest U.S. pancake-house chain forecast sales growth for its Applebee's and namesake restaurants. The company projected that sales for locations open at least 18 months would rise 2% to 4% in 2008 for IHOP and 1% to 2% for Applebee's, which it acquired last year. The forecast comes as several casual-restaurant chains such as Ruby Tuesday Inc. and California Pizza Kitchen Inc. have been hurt as sales declined because of a weaker economy and higher gasoline prices.
