British film and stage star Julie Andrews, 75, will be honored at "Backstage at the Geffen," the Geffen Playhouse's annual fundraiser, on May 2 for cutting a swath on Broadway with leading roles in "Victor/Victoria," "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot. " Her career has also spanned films from "Mary Poppins" to "Shrek Forever After" and numerous children's books written with daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. She was married for 41 years to filmmaker Blake Edwards, who passed away in December. Since the Geffen is honoring your career, I thought I'd ask you about various points along the way, starting with a very early triumph, when you were 13 and performed for King George VI at the London Palladium with Danny Kaye.

Julie Andrews wants to make one thing perfectly clear -- she's not making a comeback as a singer. For the last few months, Andrews has been trying to dispel rumors that she has had vocal reconstruction surgery. Back in 1997, she had non-cancerous nodules removed from her throat, silencing the glorious soprano that graced the Broadway musicals "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot" and film classics such as 1964's "Mary Poppins," for which she won a best actress Oscar, 1965's "The Sound of Music" and 1982's "Victor/Victoria."

The highlights here are Andrews' performances in her various Broadway and Hollywood roles, from "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot" to "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins." While devoted fans will probably cherish it, the music loses some of its charm when separated from the context of the shows.

Her four-octave voice silenced by a throat operation in 1997, Julie Andrews is once again singing in the movies. Musical scenes she shot recently for "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" may not feature the soaring tones of "The Sound of Music," but Andrews' singing still brought tears to the eyes of even hardened stagehands.

Less than a month after coming on the market, the tidy white home with gray shutters is already in escrow.
