JULIE WALTERS had distinct opinions about how her character should look in the new film "Driving Lessons," even if it meant she would have to stop covering up her gray hair with dye. "That was painful," she said, laughing. In the coming-of-age story about a 17-year-old boy, Walters plays an eccentric, dipsomaniac British actress named "Dame" Evie Walton. "I thought she would have long hair because short hair is something people coif," the 56-year-old actress explained.

It's 10 years ago now since Julie Walters first entered the consciousness of American filmgoers in "Educating Rita," playing a young working-class housewife who wants to improve herself by studying literature. She was hugely endearing in the role, which won her an Oscar nomination, and Walters charmed America in person with her refreshingly down-to-earth and comic honesty. "I went on the Johnny Carson show, and he invited me back while we were still on air," says Walters, now 44.

Director Terry Jones' new film, "Personal Services," has been "put on ice" in England because its real-life subject--the infamous Streatham madam, Cynthia Payne--is back in the dock, charged with "exercising control and direction over the movement of prostitutes for personal gain." When it comes to good-luck trinkets, baseball players have nothing on Oscar nominees. But toting a talisman offers no guarantee. Best supporting actress nominee Julie Walters tucked a lump of coal into her Jimmy Choo evening bag as a reminder of the hardships endured by the striking miners portrayed in "Billy Elliot." This wry and delightful 1993 British comedy has much the appeal of "Enchanted April" in that it offers an array of formidable actresses and, best of all, it boasts Jeanne Moreau (pictured) in an all-too-rare starring role. Cast as a flamboyant half-English, half-Egyptian femme fatale of a "certain age" with flaming red hair and a Norma Desmond wardrobe, Moreau is the exotic Lili. She descends upon Croydon, a staid London suburb, circa 1959.
