In law--as in sports or on the battlefield--the best defense sometimes is a good offense. And no one is playing tougher offense than the lawyers who are defending one of four young men charged in the April 29 beating and robbery of truck driver Reginald O. Denny. With a fusillade of public comments, charges and insinuations, lawyers and a spokesman for the Center for Constitutional Law and Justice have launched what promises to be a no-holds-barred campaign for Damian Monroe (Football) Williams.

When teens plan fun summer activities, few would start their list with "performing Shakespeare." But for eight amateur thespians, a highlight of their vacation will be appearing with Cal Lutheran's Kingsmen Shakespeare Company in its summer tribute to the bard. Next week, the Ryder Cup takes center stage, but this week it's the female professionals who will be making the most noise at the Solheim Cup. Europe won two years ago in the last meeting, 14 1/2-11 1/2, in the rain at Loch Lomond in Scotland. It was Europe's second victory in six matches, but the U.S. is 3-0 when hosting the event, and these matches are being played at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn.

It's one thing to fall off the wagon as John Daly did, but it's quite another to land on his feet the way he has managed to do. Daly, 31, who lost his $10-million endorsement deal with Wilson at the same time he lost in his experiment as a social drinker and had to enter the Betty Ford Clinic, is coming back to the PGA Tour in a big way.
