Milwaukee Brewer pitcher Julio Machado, wanted by police on murder charges in the shooting death of a woman in the western Venezuela city of Barquisimeto, is expected to surrender to police today. Machado is alleged to have shot a 24-year-old woman in the head with a pistol last month when the car in which she was a passenger refused to let Machado's car pass. Machado, a Venezuela native, first pitched in the major leagues in 1989 for the New York Mets.

Judge Rachel Rimer said the case "continues, but in the meantime (Machado) is permitted to leave prison." Rimer said she would decide Monday whether Machado can leave Venezuela to play for the Brewers this season. Machado is accused of killing Edicta Vasquez on Dec. 8.

Milwaukee Brewer reliever and Venezuelan murder suspect Julio Machado may be freed from prison to play during the 1992 season, according to Venezuelan officials.
