Oreste Simi, the starting quarterback at Taft last season as a junior, has transferred to Birmingham. He better be ready for a challenge, because Birmingham Coach Jim Rose has put together a very tough nonleague schedule that includes games against Newbury Park, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Fairfax, Chaminade and Oaks Christian. "Let's play the best," Rose said. Simi was expected to receive strong competition from Chris Duncan, a standout last season on Taft's junior varsity team.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office will investigate the death of a 16-year-old football player who collapsed during a high school game last week, a department official said Sunday. The agency will try to determine what caused the death of Dodi Soza, who was playing for Downey High School when he collapsed Thursday during a game at Lynwood High. Coroner's Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said Soza's young age was the main reason why her office had decided to investigate. Soza, a running back, was playing for his school's junior varsity team when he collapsed on the field, according to KTLA . He died Saturday.

Last week was 21-20 hindsight for Lancaster, which defeated Chaminade by that score in its nonleague opener. Last year, Lancaster lost to Crespi, Chaminade's Mission League rival, 21-20, on a Hail Mary pass in the fourth quarter. Lancaster led Chaminade, 21-7, at halftime but had to hold off a late two-point conversion to win. "A couple of times, I was thinking, 'Oh, no. Not again,' " Coach Ray DeShane said. * It was quite a varsity debut for Tony Ortiz of Lancaster.

Want to know the most surprising development of the 2012 high school football season? It's the rise of a new group of quarterbacks few envisioned would become standouts so quickly. They have come seemingly out of nowhere - well, really off the junior varsity team or as unsung varsity backups. They were inserted into the starting lineup at the most important position, embraced the challenge, and look what they have accomplished. Ian Fieber, a junior at Mission Viejo who was a backup at Orange Lutheran, has led the Diablos to a 7-0 record.

Although Yahoo named Marissa Mayer as its next chief executive Monday afternoon, not many people know her -- her name was never mentioned during the company's CEO hiring process. But in early 2011, Mayer sat down with the Los Angeles Times for a piece on how she had found her success, revealing the personal side of one of Google's most influential executives. In the piece, Mayer, who has been in charge of Google's geographic and local services, said that in 1999, she came to be Google's first female engineer and its 20th employee only after rolling the dice.

* Marco Estrada of Sylmar, a senior pitcher, has come out of nowhere to rank among region leaders in earned-run average. Estrada spent three years on the junior varsity team. That usually means the coaching staff paid little attention to him. He thought about quitting. "I thought about it once--right when I found out I was going to be on JVs again," he said. "I was mad and sad." Coach Gary Donatella is glad Estrada stuck around, because he's having a dream season.

First he lost his star defender and center midfielder to knee injuries. His stopper has missed half the season because of broken ribs. And an offensive slump kept the high-powered Westlake girls' soccer team from scoring multiple goals. But Coach Aerick Brown has stood tall and kept his cool through it all. Brown emphasizes offense, but it has been Westlake's rock-solid defense that has kept the Warriors from sinking. They've become one of the elite teams in Southern California.

A 15-year-old La Mesa girl's bid to play football on the Helix High School junior varsity team was rejected Thursday by the Grossmont Union High School District Board of Trustees. On a 4-1 vote, the board refused to change a district policy that prevents girls from participating in certain contact sports, telling sophomore Karen Davis that football is a dangerous game and that the risk of injury is too great to allow her to play.
