Just for Laughs, Montreal's 7-year-old annual comedy festival, has emerged as the leading forum for showcasing and marketing comedy talent in North America's $1.1-billion laughs industry. More than 400,000 people and 250 talent scouts attended this summer's event, which featured more than 250 performers from 12 countries in venues ranging from free street performances to nightclubs and gala shows in a 2,200-seat theater.

What's happening the next few weeks: * The Montreal International Jazz Festival runs June 29 to July 9. Shirley Horn, above, will open the festival. Other performers include MeShell Ndegeocello, Arturo Sandoval, Max Roach, Mal Waldron, the John Pizzarelli Trio, Brad Mehldau, Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell, Chick Corea & Origin and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Anita Wise was the talk of the 1989 Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal when she performed the first week in French and the second in English and had audiences in the palm of her hand no matter what she did. Wise works in a low-key, small-voiced, even demure manner, the kind of figure easy to overlook in a crowded room until you realize she's inflicting stinging little paper cuts all around, including, occasionally, on herself. Wise's father was a World War II U.S. Army officer stationed in France; her mother was a ballet dancer for the Paris Opera.

Finding the rare superstars amid the legions of wannabes takes as much stamina as instinct. Here are a few examples of how that tenacity can pay off. Several film festivals have put out recent calls for entries. Among them: * The fourth annual Hollywood Film Festival will accept submissions through April 30. The festival, to be held Aug. 2-7 at venues including the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and Paramount Studios, will also select five finalist films each month for the Hollywood Online Film Festival, with finalists shown and voted on at http://www.etonline.com. Online winners will be shown as part of August's Hollywood Film Festival.

What's happening this summer: * More than 450 artists from 11 countries bring laughter to the streets, comedy clubs and theaters during the 16th edition of the Just for Laughs comedy festival, July 15-26. There will be five festival galas at the St. Denis Theatre, hosted by Don Rickles, Ray Romano, Rob Schneider, Fred Savage and Kevin Pollak, and featuring a lineup of veterans and up-and-coming artists.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, which recently launched its Art + Comedy programming initiative , isn't the only museum turning to humor.   The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as part of its Film Independent at LACMA series, will screen the first two episodes of the new season of Comedy Central's “Kroll Show” on Friday night. The sketch-based show was created by writer-actor-comedian Nick Kroll, the 2013 Breakout Star of the Year at Montreal's Just for Laughs comedy festival.

Reggie McFadden remembers smiling and laughing a lot while growing up in Brooklyn. So it made perfect sense when this jovial, happy-go-lucky kid grew up to become a stand-up comedian. He doesn't laugh as much these days. "Because I've worked in the comedy clubs, because I've heard every joke in the world, because I'm a comedian, it's really hard to make me laugh now," the 27-year-old Los Angeles resident said in a recent phone interview. "Out here in L.A., everybody is always smiling.
