Justin Vedder had four touchdown passes Saturday as California ended a losing streak at five games with a 33-14 victory over Oregon State in a matchup of the teams that shared last place in the Pacific 10 Conference. Cal, 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10, scored on its opening series and built a 33-7 lead in the first half. Dameane Douglas caught scoring passes of 20 and 11 yards from Vedder in the half. Vedder finished 21-of-29 passing for 215 yards with one interception.

Quarterback Justin Vedder knows one thing with absolute conviction. The California Bears are going bowling this season. Rose, Cotton, Holiday, Sun, Aloha? "Albany Bowl," said Vedder, the irrepressible new leader of the Bears who has his teammates hooked on Tuesday night bowling. "It's a couple of miles from campus." Even if Vedder had said the Bears are going to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1959, you'd almost have to listen.

Justin Vedder and Joe Cesta, two keys to Saddleback's undefeated season, were selected the Mission Conference Central Division offense and defensive football players of the year by a vote of the coaches. Vedder, a sophomore quarterback from Laguna Hills High, threw for 2,630 yards and 20 touchdowns in the regular season in which the Gauchos went 10-0. Cesta, a sophomore middle linebacker from Los Angeles Loyola High, led the team with 111 tackles.

Justin Vedder displayed his ability to throw deep, throw short and also run when forced to--all in one quarter--as he led Saddleback to a 34-20 victory over visiting Fullerton Saturday in a Mission Conference Central Division football game. Vedder, a sophomore, directed four touchdown drives in the third quarter, ending three with scoring passes. His performance and that of the defense enabled Saddleback to erase a 14-7 halftime deficit.

Joe Cesta, Saddleback's talented middle linebacker, was a J.C. Grid-Wire first-team All-American pick and Saddleback quarterback Justin Vedder made the second team. Cesta, from Los Angeles Loyola High, led the team with 111 tackles in the regular season. Vedder, from Laguna Hills High, threw 22 touchdowns passes and helped lead the team to an 11-0 record and a No. 2 ranking in the nation behind Blinn (Texas), which was 12-0.

Quarterback Justin Vedder had his most productive game of the season, helping Saddleback to a 31-12 victory over Golden West in a Mission Conference Central Division football game Saturday in Mission Viejo. Vedder, a freshman transfer from Boston University, completed 23 of 36 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns in a little more than three quarters. His yardage total was the fourth best in a game for Saddleback.

Saddleback's offense was unable to put the game away, but the defense did, and the Gauchos completed an undefeated season with a 17-14 victory over Riverside in a Mission Conference Central Division football game Saturday. Saddleback took a 17-7 lead, when the Gauchos' Mark Reynosa was stopped for no gain on fourth and one at the Riverside 10 with four minutes 48 seconds left. Riverside then drove to the two. Ryan Pizinger scored on a two-yard run with 2:03 left to play.

Saddleback Coach Bill Cunerty has few reservations about turning sophomore quarterback Justin Vedder loose on the football field. Cunerty's concern with Vedder is what he might say when a reporter is present. Vedder is a very confident player with lofty expectations for himself and the Saddleback team, but he has been asked by the coach not to share such feelings this season, especially in terms of wins and losses.
