Two Foothill High School students attending a study program at Oxford University emerged from a fatal bus crash in the English countryside without serious physical injuries, but their parents remain wary of emotional wounds that may surface later. "For a 16-year-old to see kids he just met put into body bags was a pretty tough thing," said Dr. John West, whose son, Justin, suffered only scrapes and cuts in the crash. "The girl who lived in the room next to (Justin) was killed. It's going to be tough for him."

Ooh, they're sneaky petes, those 'Amazing Race' producers. All season long, sisters Jen and Kisha have been the most stubbornly overlooked and under-dramatized team in the pack. Sure, they had back story (raised by a single mom). They had wingspan, they had determination. But aside from Kisha's woodpecker laugh and Jen's habit of dropping expletives under duress, there was little to distinguish them from the other racers, and in retrospect, it seems clear they liked it that way. Never once did they capture a leg; never once did they finish last.

My last words to you, June, were a lie. June Freeman was our friend of 25 years. We had known her from the time our older son, Robert, was 6 months old. She was a widowed neighbor, a young 70 then. June and my wife, Diane, soon became fast friends. June would ride bikes with Diane, with Robert riding on the back. She would plead with us to go out to dinner so that she could watch Robert. Three years later, our next son, Justin, arrived, and she was ecstatic. Another child to coo over.

WASHINGTON - He was a high school dropout, sometime junior college student and failed Army recruit. But Edward Joseph Snowden found his calling in America's spy services, using his computer skills to rise from a lowly security position to life as a well-paid private contractor for the National Security Agency. At age 29, he rented a bungalow with his girlfriend north of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and claimed to earn $200,000 a year. On Monday, hours after he admitted disclosing a trove of intelligence secrets to the media, Snowden checked out of the glitzy Mira Hotel in Hong Kong, where he had holed up for weeks, and dropped out of sight.

ARDMORE, Pa. -- The 17th green at Merion Golf Club sits in a quiet corner of the course, where the driving range and commuter trains normally provide the only background noise. Onto this spot, the U.S. Golf Assn. built two grandstands, one towering three stories over the green, to accommodate more than 5,000 spectators. Knowing that, Sean Palmer, Merion's first assistant golf pro, said before the U.S. Open that this would be the loudest place on the course. And still, the piercing roar that followed Phil Mickelson's birdie putt at the par-three hole was overwhelming.

In the sequence, filmed in downtown Los Angeles last summer, Justin Bieber appears in a characteristically swaggy black suit, running through a grimy warehouse. At every turn, he's besieged by camera-wielding commandos - ninja-like paparazzi - who pop out of the woodwork to photograph the teen pop phenom's every move. While his song “She Don't Like the Lights” (from the deluxe edition of Bieber's smash 2012 album “Believe”) plays in the background, the singer is shown handing out beat-downs, dispatching the paps with acrobatic kicks to the head.

Suddenly glasses seem to be all the rage. Scenesters are wearing oversized frames at the club, Tina Fey flaunts sexy librarian-style specs, and Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z have launched remarkable collections of Clark Kent-style eyewear. And, sure, you can go to LensCrafters to buy a serviceable pair in a cafeteria-type setting, or to Oliver Peoples for some high-class panache. But if funky boutique is more your style, a couple of independent spots in town are definitely not from the cookie-cutter.

Avalanna Routh, the little girl who captured the hearts of Justin Bieber and other stars, her doctors and many of those just lucky enough to meet her, has died at age 6. Upon hearing of her death, Bieber tweeted Wednesday: "just got the worst news ever. one of the greatest spirits i have ever known is gone. please pray for her family and for her. RIP Avalanna. i love you. " "Our darling Avalanna went to Heaven this morning. Oh Avalanna, the brightest star -- you took our hearts with you, our greatest Love," her parents posted early Wednesday on a Twitter account started on the girl's behalf. The powerful narcotic popped up on the cultural grid around the turn of the millennium. A Texas producer-remixer named DJ Screw paid homage to its woozy, heavy-lidded high by dramatically slowing down beats and vocals to replicate the drug's sleepwalker euphoria. Among Southern rappers, the chemical mixture - called "sizzurp" on the street - soon became as ubiquitous as gold jewelry. This wasn't some exotic new hallucinogen. In fact, it was usually mixed with fruit soda and sipped from oversized plastic foam cups.

ARDMORE, Pa. - Life went on in this leafy Philadelphia suburb Friday, despite near-catastrophic injuries inflicted on the egos of 156 golfers. They were playing in the U.S. Open. Friday, it was the U.S. Oops. It was a day featuring men thrashing around in ankle-deep grass. Also, men, looking shocked as, time after time, their putts slid past the hole. In golf, they call it the cup. Friday, at the wonderfully evil Merion Golf Club, it was a keyhole. "They've given us some really, really tough pins," said Tiger Woods, one of the golfers who escaped serious injury and is firmly in contention after 36 holes at three over par. The "they" is the United States Golf Assn., also known as the American Society of Sadism.
