‏ AEG helped spark a downtown Los Angeles renaissance with its bold bet on the once-beaten-down no-go zone. Today a halted sale of the company - and its marquee sports  and entertainment holdings which include Staples Center, LA Live and the Los Angeles Kings - will probably do little to stop the development march, said consultant Alan Reay of Atlas Hospitality. Even hiccups in efforts to reel in a professional football team - and build a stadium downtown - would do little to stop the neighborhood's upswing, Reay said.

With tourism on the rise in downtown Los Angeles, construction is set to begin on a $172-million Marriott hotel complex that has even bigger aspirations than when it was announced almost a year ago. Downtown's thriving hotel market can be seen in the long-anticipated development near the L.A. Live entertainment complex and Staples Center, which has grown by a floor and 15 additional rooms from the original plan. Now set to be 23 stories, the tower on Olympic Boulevard will house a 174-room Courtyard by Marriott and a 218-room Residence Inn by Marriott under one roof when it opens in summer 2014.

JW Marriott Resorts have a little something extra for holiday visitors: a $100 credit to spend during their stay. The deal is good at resorts in Tucson, Orlando, Fla., San Antonio and other venues and lasts until the end of January. The deal: The offer, called the Holiday $100 Resort Credit, doesn't go live until Nov. 1 and requires a two-night minimum stay. Extra days score an additional $50 resort credit that can be used for dining, a round of golf or on spa treatments. I like this deal because it's good at resorts in the West, including three in Arizona, one in Las Vegas and another in Palm Desert, Calif.

The Los Angeles Marriott Downtown has been purchased out of foreclosure by a Chinese real estate development company that vows to improve the aging hotel, which caters to business travelers. Shenzhen New World Group Co. got the 469-room hotel at 3rd and Figueroa streets at a substantial discount from its previous sale price as the country's hotel market continues to reel from recession woes. The price was not formally disclosed, but industry experts believe Shenzhen paid $60 million, according to consultant Alan Reay of Atlas Hospitality Group.

Phoenix heats up in summer, but maybe air-conditioning and pool fun can offset triple-digit heat. That and an inexpensive room. For $149 a night in summer at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa , you can do a lot (or a little) at the resort and cash in on a $50 daily credit too. The deal: The wow factor for the Family Fling & Swing package is all the extras, not the least of which is a $50 resort credit each day and no resort fee (usually $25 a day). Rooms start at $149 a night plus tax and include free Wi-Fi or Internet access and free parking; free golf (after noon)

BOSTON - As he gave his acceptance address at the Republican National Convention last week, Mitt Romney for the first time gave America an intimate look at the role that his Mormon faith has played in his life and how his work in the church as a pastor helped shape him. When Romney and his wife, Ann, attended church Sunday in Wolfeboro, N.H., his close friend J.W. Marriott (who is known as “Bill”) offered a bookend to that discussion - testifying during the service about how the spotlight on Romney this week had cast the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a positive light and had drawn welcome attention to good works of the church.

So much happens in Chicago  during the Fourth of July week. There's a free Independence Day Celebration concert at Millennium Park , fireworks at the Navy Pier and a boat tour to take it all in. JW Marriott Chicago marks the holiday by dropping room rates to $199 a night.  The deal: This is for folks who want to travel over the holiday and want a classy holiday far from a backyard barbecue. The downtown hotel is close to Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile shopping and other landmarks, which makes for easy touring.

It can get mighty hot in central Arizona in summer -- and that in turn forces hotels to turn up the heat in the promotions department. Case in point: the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa in Scottsdale. A Southwestern classic, the 125-acre desert resort is offering a Linger Longer package to entice heat-seekers who want to make the most of their weekends. The package nets you a stay in a 550-square-foot, nonsmoking "casita" on the resort's sprawling grounds at the foot of Mummy Mountain.
