KTLA-TV Channel 5 has hired two new anchors to take over its 10 p.m. newscast starting Sept. 14: Micah Ohlman, a former weekend anchor at KABC-TV Channel 7, and Victoria Recano, a former reporter for the syndicated "The Insider" and "Inside Edition." The pair also will team on a new 6 p.m. weekday newscast that KTLA plans to introduce the same day, challenging the local newscasts on KCBS-TV Channel 2, KNBC-TV Channel 4 and KABC-TV Channel 7. KTLA's current 10 p.m. anchors are getting new assignments.

CBS Corp. on Thursday tapped a veteran general manager, Steve Mauldin, to run its two Los Angeles stations: KCBS-TV Channel 2 and KCAL-TV Channel 9. Mauldin has worked in the industry for 32 years, most recently managing CBS' Dallas stations. Mauldin visited Los Angeles four years ago to learn how executives combined the operations of the two stations and replicated the model in Dallas, so he is familiar with his new turf in L.A. "We have a lot to work with here. Both television stations have a lot of talent and KCAL has a great brand," he said in an interview.

I can't believe that KABC-TV Channel 7 ran a commercial for its sex and censorship special right in the middle of "Mary Poppins." There are so few good family movies these days, it's a shame Channel 7 had to ruin this one. I hope in the future KABC will use a little more discretion in airing these types of commercials. KABC-TV Channel 7 news anchor Tawny Little will join "A.M. Los Angeles" as co-host on Tuesday, replacing Cristina Ferrare, who tapes her last show today. Little, who formerly co-anchored the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, will continue on the 6 p.m. broadcast with Jerry Dunphy through mid-July, when she will begin a six-week maternity leave.

I want to thank KABC-TV Channel 7 for captioning its newscasts every day. I was just hoping for at least one half-hour of captioned news each day, but the captioning is presented on the 4, 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts five days a week. I can see the station is still working on the captioning format, but perhaps that takes time. At least I can finally watch captioned news on a local station. Mary Ann Horn, Seal Beach

Bravo to KABC-TV Channel 7's Roger Bell and Jim Hattendorf for their intelligent decision not to show the horrifying videotape. I had the misfortune of turning on the news on KNBC-TV Channel 4 only to be greeted by the vile footage. Sadly, the world's greatest form of communication had reached an all-time low when we succumb to murder for ratings and profit. Paddy Chayefsky (the writer of "Network") was truly a prophet. Terry Crofoot news director at KABC-TV Channel 7 for the past seven years, was named Friday to take over as president of the station. He succeeds John C. Severino, who resigned Sept. 15 to become president of the Prime Ticket cable sports channel. Crofoot has worked in television news since 1969, first at KGTV in San Diego and then in Los Angeles. He joined the Channel 2 news department as assignment manager in 1975, then moved to KABC in 1977 as director of news operations.

Authorities were searching Friday for a woman who they believe intends to kill her two children and herself. Lisa Ruelas took her sons, ages 5 and 10, from their Altadena home Thursday, leaving a note telling of her murder-suicide plan, sheriff's officials said. Ruelas' husband died about 18 months ago and she could be depressed, Sheriff's Lt. Greg Sisneros told KABC-TV Channel 7. He said authorities began searching for the family after friends found the home empty and the note inside.

KNBC-TV Channel 4 and KABC-TV Channel 7 continued to fight for dominance in local ratings in the just-concluded May sweeps, with KNBC retaining its long-standing dominance of the 11 p.m. news, KABC-TV remaining first in the evening newscasts, and both stations in a virtual tie in the early morning. Fueled by NBC's strong network performance, KNBC rebounded in the morning, inching out KABC by .01 of a ratings point to reclaim its top position at 5 a.m. The stations deadlocked at 5:30 and 6 a.m.

Neither the new fall programming nor the addition of Paul Moyer has stemmed KNBC-TV Channel 4's slide in the early evening news ratings race so far this season, as rival KABC-TV Channel 7 has built its lead over past year at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. According to audience measurement figures provided by Arbitron and Nielsen for Sept. 23 to Oct. 20, KNBC's ratings for the 5 p.m. broadcast anchored by Moyer were worse than one year ago, when Moyer was reading the news at KABC.

Daryl F. Gates speaking: "One of the things I'm concerned about is, if we're going to be harassed and be the butt of attacks, our men could take the attitude of just putting in their shifts and not seeking out crime." That was Gates, not in 1991 but in 1977. Not when he was chief of the Los Angeles Police Department but when he was still assistant chief.
