California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris is the top prosecutor in the most populous state in the nation, but her counterparts in six other states, including Tennessee and Alabama were paid more last year, a state salary survey has found. The California attorney general's salary was also less than the pay received by the city attorneys of Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco and Sacramento. The survey was conducted by the staff of the California Citizens Compensation Commission in preparation for a meeting Thursday at which it will consider whether to provide pay raises to the governor, legislators, attorney general and other statewide constitutional officers.

The state of California has fired the opening shot in its fight to get mobile apps to comply with state privacy laws. California Atty. Gen. Kamala D. Harris filed a suit against Delta Air Lines over its Fly Delta mobile app. The app allows Delta fliers to check into flights, pay for checked baggage and access their frequent flier accounts with the airline. But the suit alleges that Delta has not provided a privacy policy for its standalone app, which gathers information such as a traveler's full name, billing and home addresses, date of birth and credit card information.

It must be comforting for the citizens of San Francisco to know that the criminals in their area not only have the defense on their side, but now the prosecution as well ("In Search of Elusive Justice," by Scott Duke Harris, Oct. 24). Dist. Atty. Kamala Harris says that a "get-tough" policy has no track record of success. What is the track record for the "hug-the-criminals" approach? This could be a good thing. Maybe more criminals will move to San Francisco. Tom G. Moore Covina

Re "Flattery really got him nowhere," April 6 Because The Times and other serious journalistic outlets have maintained professional objectivity, it becomes ever more interesting to observe how quickly the predictable opportunists of the right-wing media have attacked the president for his "best looking" remark - a misguided fragment issued when introducing California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris. Despite the fact we've suffered through the right's lambasting of a perceived "political correctness" as yet another deplorable affectation of the left, that same affectation seems now to be embraced by the right.
