The eldest child of Robert F. Kennedy expects to announce her candidacy for Congress in a month and will run as her own candidate, not as a Kennedy, it was reported Sunday. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, 34, who would oppose GOP Rep. Helen Delich Bentley for the Baltimore County seat, said she has the endorsement of the state's Democratic Party, the Baltimore Sun reported. "I'm planning to run by myself so they know me, Kathleen Townsend," the attorney said.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, pointing to a Kennedy "family tradition of service and sacrifice," launched her campaign Thursday for a House seat from Maryland. Townsend, the second child of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy to seek a congressional seat in the upcoming elections, acknowledged that she faces an uphill battle against one-term Rep. Cesar Chavez's fast in protest against the use of certain pesticides had gone largely unnoticed by the outside world until three children of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy showed up here Thursday to lend their support. Chavez, 61, began the water-only fast at midnight July 16 to draw attention to 'five dangerous pesticides' that he believes can cause cancer and other health problems for farm workers and consumers alike.
