Anderson Cooper is apparently not done being embarrassed on live TV, because the CNN anchor is teaming up with comedian Kathy Griffin once again to host CNN's New Year's Eve coverage from Times Square. This is the seventh straight year for Cooper and Griffin, who've been through a lot over the years, including semi-nudity (Griffin's), saucy language and enough sex talk to make Cooper giggle like a kid. In a statement, Cooper said, "Wait ... what? CNN hired her again? For real?"

For a short and breezy documentary narrated by Adam Sandler in which a group of famous comedians talk about themselves, "The Improv: 50 Years Behind the Brick Wall" packs a surprisingly provocative punch. In these days of digital "stardom," when fame is tweet-fleeting and the goal too often seems more Simon Cowell-approved branding than original voice, the rigors of an old-fashioned comedy club seem historically artisanal, like candle-dipping at Colonial Williamsburg. In the post-"Seinfeld" years, stand-up comedy, once the province of the scruffy and outrageous, has become increasingly sleek and well fed. Ray Romano, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Judd Apatow, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, the Wayans brothers, Sarah Silverman, Kathy Griffin, Jimmy Fallon - the people reminiscing here about the Improv are among the media elite, with studio deals and television shows, car collections and famous divorces.

COMEDY Kathy Griffin's presence in sitcoms, on the red carpet, "The View," Broadway and the NYT bestseller list is still ancillary to her stand-up career and six Emmy-rific seasons of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-list. To promote its Emmy nomination, A&E bought a print ad for "Hoarders" that used quotes from celebrity fan Kathy Griffin. The problem? "Hoarders" and Bravo's "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" are both nominated in the reality program category. Not happy with her competitor's tactic, Griffin has come out with her own Emmy promo ad that reads, "Quoting me in an Emmy ad? Bravo, Hoarders. BRAVO. " Griffin is pictured among stacks of newspapers and magazines, a la "Hoarders.

Kathy Griffin was sitting in her sparse dressing room when one of her minions presented her with a golden chalice. But the ornate container wasn't filled with Cristal Champagne or chocolate truffles. Griffin's life on the D-list apparently means that her cup runneth over with pint-sized packages of peanut butter. And the chalice? It's made of plastic. "Well, aren't I the big star?" she teased, shoving a spoonful of the peanut butter into her mouth in hopes of a protein boost. The flame-haired 49-year-old comedian known for her acerbic humor ?

Newt Gingrich, making an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" on Wednesday to promote his new gig on CNN's recently resurrected "Crossfire," offered his thoughts on the current impasse between President Obama and the GOP. "He shouldn't give them what they want," Gingrich said of Obama. Does this mean Gingrich, the onetime Republican speaker of the House who himself presided over two government shutdowns during President Bill Clinton's terms, has turned on his own party?
