PUSH, the Rev. Jesse Jackson's civil rights organization, may picket and urge a boycott of CBS-owned KCBS-TV here to remedy what Jackson on Friday called "inadequacies and injustices" affecting minorities who work at the station or watch its programs. But he said no date has been set yet for such actions by his group. That will be discussed today at a meeting of PUSH officials in Los Angeles, he said.

Vera Jimenez, who has been KCBS-TV's morning traffic reporter, will begin a new stint Jan. 25 as the evening weather anchor for KTLA-TV. Jimenez, who left KCBS and sister station KCAL last week after six years, will report on weather and traffic for KTLA's 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. newscasts, and weather for the 10 p.m. newscasts. "I'm really excited -- I'll get to see how normal people live," Jimenez quipped in an interview Wednesday. "I've been working mornings for so long." KTLA News Director Jason R. Ball praised Jimenez, calling her a valuable addition to the station, which, like The Times, is owned by Tribune.

I must commend KCBS for its recent local earthquake coverage. Flipping between KCBS, KNBC and KABC, it was clear only KCBS had a handle on what had happened. KNBC and KABC went back to regular programming when they didn't have up-to-date information. But KCBS stuck with the story and kept going. Sophia Jones, Venice

I used to watch KCBS news, but I plan to look elsewhere after reading their duplicitous spin on this decision to narrow viewer choices ("Picking Up Mixed Signals," by Greg Braxton, June 12). "KCAL-KCBS executives downplayed such concerns, saying the merger will prove especially beneficial to viewers of KCBS." What would be even more beneficial would be an improved KCBS that is independent of and separate from KCAL. Competition serves the viewer's interest far better than merging. KEN LANXNER San Clemente
