We have been informed that our young people have little knowledge of geography. Well, they are up on whoever fed Keith Jackson his opening line for last Saturday's national broadcast of the Oklahoma-UCLA football game. As the home audience was given an aerial view of the dirty atmosphere, we were informed that Pasadena is at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley. For Times readers unfamiliar with the area, Pasadena is in the San Gabriel Valley.

Arizona suspended two starters -- fullback Gilbert Harris and guard Keith Jackson -- on Friday after the university declared them ineligible. The players will miss the Wildcats' last four games. No reason was given for the action. On Tuesday, tailback Clarence Farmer was kicked off the team. Farmer was the Pacific 10 Conference's leading rusher as a sophomore in 2001. A teen-ager once accused of supplying the cocaine that President Bush displayed during a televised speech received a 10-year sentence Wednesday from a judge who said the mandatory penalty was too harsh. U.S. District Judge Stanley Sporkin suggested to Keith Jackson that he ask Bush for clemency so that his sentence, the minimum for selling drugs near a schoolyard, could be reduced.

Jens Gordon had 11 points and 8 rebounds to lead Santa Clara to a 40-33 victory over St. Mary's Saturday night in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at Santa Clara. Santa Clara (17-8, 8-4) trailed most of the second half until center Dan Weiss scored to give the Broncos a 34-33 lead with 1:43 left. St. Mary's (17-7, 8-4) didn't score in the final 4 minutes 39 seconds and had its seven-game winning streak snapped. Eric Newman scored 11 points for the Gaels.
