USC quarterback Matt Barkley turned in three of his finest passing hours Saturday night with 423 yards and six touchdowns in a 50-0 romp over UCLA. Sunday, though, was rush hour. There were mad dashes everywhere. Coaches were either losing their jobs or on the verge as athletic directors raced each other to speed-dial agents for Mike Leach, Kevin Sumlin, Mike Bellotti and the ghost of Bear Bryant. Officially out are Ron Zook (Illinois), Turner Gill (Kansas) and the coaches at Memphis and Alabama Birmingham.

A lot of schools are playing in, and out, of their leagues. Think Utah is enjoying the Pacific 12 Conference so far? How can Missouri be ready for the Southeastern Conference if it isn't ready for the Big 12? It's a long season and getting longer (for some) by the minute. Fresno State, of the Western Athletic Conference, didn't belong under the same Friday night lights with more athletic Boise State, now of the Mountain West Conference. Fresno State waited a year to avenge last year's 51-0 stomping in Boise, only to fall short again.

Case Keenum is back. Yet, he's not. Last year around this time, the University of Houston quarterback was jetting off to Connecticut for a series of ESPN shows previewing the college football season. This year, Keenum is in a no-fly zone and the story is all local — two Keenums will wear Houston jerseys at games, Case and Kimberly, his wife of three months. A year ago, Keenum was billed as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy and his team given an outside shot of breaking into a Bowl Championship Series game.

The halfhearted rallying cry among Dodgers fans seems to be: Maybe it's not as bad as everybody says. ... Perhaps a few well-chosen words from a self-described team leader such as Andre Ethier would raise hopes. ... Oh, wait. ... It would be easier to believe in the Angels' chances if Kendrys Morales were not opening the season on the shelf. ... Jered Weaver and the Angels are 25-1 shots to win the World Series, according to odds listed at bodog.com, while Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers are 35-1 shots.

No. 1 Auburn will have an All-American anchoring each side of the ball when the Tigers play for the national championship. Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley were voted to the Associated Press All-America team along with Oregon running back LaMichael James , who will face Auburn in the BCS title game in Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 10. Auburn is one of five teams with two players on the first team. The others were Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Is "whew" a word? The nation's top two teams both trailed at halftime on Black (and Quack) Friday and, for at least a few hours, something historic filled the air. A loss by either No.1 Oregon or No. 2 Auburn would have put a mid-major, Boise State or Texas Christian, in major position to play for this year's national title. That drama, which started in Tuscaloosa, ended in Eugene with Oregon and Auburn both showing up for the second half. There was more late-night drama, though, in Reno, where Nevada stunned Boise State, 34-31 in overtime.
