Frank Ocean cut a sharp figure in crisp jeans, a butterscotch tuxedo jacket and his signature multicolored headband while rehearsing at Staples Center for the Grammy Awards ceremony. But as the R&B singer conferred with Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich following a run-through of his performance Thursday, another wardrobe item came into view: a wrist splint on Ocean's left arm. It was the result, presumably, of his alleged brawl last month with Chris Brown in the parking lot of a West Hollywood recording studio.

Grammy viewers might have wondered what the bleep happened to the music. During a medley performed near the end of Sunday's award show by rappers Lil Wayne, Eminem and Drake, CBS silenced the audio at least 10 times, presumably due to salty language. Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich said Monday that the hip-hop era has created a tricky situation for award shows, which must keep up with the culture but also abide by broadcast decency standards. Indeed, networks have spent years battling the Federal Communications Commission over curse words uttered during national telecasts.

KEN EHRLICH is producing his fourth straight Emmy telecast, this time on ABC with five co-hosts from the world of reality TV: Tom Bergeron ("Dancing With the Stars"), Heidi Klum ("Project Runway"), Howie Mandel ("Deal or No Deal"), Jeff Probst ("Survivor") and Ryan Seacrest ("American Idol"). It will be the Emmys' first use of multiple hosts since 2003, for a 60th telecast meant to celebrate the history of the medium. ABC is, for instance, giving viewers a chance to vote online on the 10 best all-time moments from both dramas and comedies, with results broadcast on Emmy night.

"Excuse me, could you turn down the music? I mean, I like Sinatra, but. . . ." The waiter at the Italian restaurant gave the customer, Ken Ehrlich, a puzzled look before shrugging and walking off in search of a volume knob. Even when he's sitting beneath dangling Chianti bottles and eating antipasto in Hollywood, the executive producer of the Grammy Awards still has strong opinions about the way music should reach the public.

What a surprise that Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich had criticisms for Robert Hilburn's accurate depiction of the ridiculously irrelevant Grammys ("Grammys 'Irrelevant'? That's a Minority Report," Feb. 16). Just because the awards inched toward credibility this year with nominations for the White Stripes and OutKast doesn't mean he's off the hook for an otherwise boring celebration of mediocrity. Barrett Porter Los Angeles I have one simple question: If the Grammys are about the music, as Ehrlich attests, how on Earth did Justin Timberlake win against the likes of George Harrison, Sting and Warren Zevon?

It's Miller Time: There's a changing of the guard at "The Dennis Miller Show." Laurence Ferber, who is executive producer of Joan Rivers' show, on Monday becomes co-executive producer of Miller's show on an interim basis. He replaces Ken Ehrlich, who is returning to specials and event programming after launching Miller's show in January. Ehrlich will continue as a consultant for several months.
