It was Aug. 1 and Ken Overby was at home in Anaheim, flipping through course guides and enrollment papers for Rancho Santiago College. Eight days later, he was 5,430 feet above sea level and wearing a Colorado football practice jersey. A lot has happened in the past few weeks to Overby, a football and baseball standout at Sunny Hills High School last season.

Four Sunny Hills High School players rushed for touchdowns as the Lancers defeated LeZerte of Edmonton, Canada, 28-6, Friday at Spaulding Stadium. Sunny Hills rushed for 218 yards and completely dominated the Voyageurs until the final 4 minutes of the game. LeZerte had its own problems between quarterback and center on snaps, fumbling the ball six times. "It wasn't necessarily anything that Sunny Hills did. We just made too many mental mistakes," LeZerte Coach Bo Jereniuk said.

Sunny Hills High School is demonstrating that when a team averages 297 yards rushing per game, it doesn't need a passing attack. Sunny Hills (3-0) will continue its ground assault at 7:30 tonight when the Lancers play Canyon (1-2) at Buena Park's Spaulding Field. Rick Orr, the Sunny Hills quarterback, has completed six of only 17 passes for 136 yards. But the Lancers' backfield combination of Brian Pizula and Ken Overby has more than made up for the lack of an air attack. Pizula, averaging 13.

Considering that Katella High School had had four football coaches in the previous four years without a winning season, it seemed strange that it would hire two coaches for the 1980 season. Roger Olson and Jack Pattison were brought in as co-coaches. For a school that had compiled an 8-18-1 record from 1977-79, it was a little step in the right direction; Katella started the 1980 season 2-2. Not Just for Peanuts Dept.: At Canyon, the charm of high school football was still in the air.
