The wheelchair belonged to the 23-year-old winner of the award, not the 89-year-old coach for whom that award is named. And the biggest smile belonged to one of the runner-ups. It was cruel, almost, this 24th presentation of the John R. Wooden Award. Another reminder of just how fleeting and fickle college athletics can be. Four years of trying can be wiped out in only 40 minutes. Or even one bad step.

Loose Kenyon, indeed. Near the end of an unusually taut night at the NBA Finals, it was difficult to determine whether it was power forward Kenyon Martin's volcanic temper or his many electric moves that was more impressive Wednesday in Game 4. Or frightening. Martin would score 35 points, a playoff career high, and take 11 rebounds in the New Jersey Nets' 113-107 loss, outstanding work against the three-time NBA champion Lakers.

Lamar Odom is well aware of what needs to be done. The Lakers forward has seen the confidence in the Denver Nuggets, witnessed the swagger of the second-best team in the Western Conference, and was definitely on the court as the Nuggets easily took two games against the Lakers this season. For those wondering about a solution to the pesky, pugnacious Nuggets, Odom has one for Sunday's game -- get physical. "It will be a hard game," he said Saturday. "We have to embrace the game being hard.

As the final minutes ticked down in Denver's series-clinching win Wednesday over Dallas, Nuggets fans chanted "Beat L.A." But Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony wonders how many people really believe his team can beat L.A. "I don't think anybody thinks we can beat the Lakers," Anthony said Sunday night after it was learned the Nuggets will face them in the Western Conference finals beginning Tuesday at Staples Center. "A couple people probably think. We believe.

Before Thursday, there were visions of glory for Cincinnati, which was expected to make its most serious run at an NCAA basketball championship since the early 1960s, when the Bearcats accomplished the feat twice and reached the final once. Some of those visions probably had star player Kenyon Martin cutting down the nets after winning the championship at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis in April. But, the unimaginable happened to Martin and No.

Defense is a "mind-set," Kenyon Martin said, and the power forward was asked whether he is trying to bring that to the Clippers. "I'm not trying to; I'm going to do it," Martin said after the Clippers used a strong defensive effort to beat the Houston Rockets, 105-103 in overtime, Sunday. "It's just who I am. " The Clippers limited the Rockets to 43% shooting, 28.6% in the fourth quarter. "It's about effort first," Martin said. "Communication is second. The effort is there.

DENVER — Tim Duncan had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs spoiled the return of Denver's Kenyon Martin with a 104-85 victory over the Nuggets on Saturday night. San Antonio (49-31) moved into seventh in the Western Conference, avoiding — at least for the moment — a first-round matchup with the top-seeded Lakers. Portland, a half-game back in eighth, plays the Lakers on Sunday. For the Nuggets, the loss was a blow to their hopes of securing the No. 2 seeding.

Tracy McGrady will not play for the U.S. basketball team at the Olympics, U.S. Coach Larry Brown said Wednesday. "Tracy dropped out," Brown said, breaking the news of yet another superstar's withdrawal from the roster. McGrady joins Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Elton Brand and Kenyon Martin among players who have withdrawn from the team or have told the selection committee they would not accept invitations.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Reggie Evans "changed the game," Chris Paul said Sunday night after the Clippers' improbable, come-from-27-points-behind victory over Memphis. It was the Clippers' bench, with Evans, Nick Young, Eric Bledsoe and Kenyon Martin "stepping up," Paul said at practice Monday about the Clippers' victory over the Grizzlies in Game 1 of the Western Conference first-round playoff series. "The bench was amazing," Paul said about his teammates who did a lot of the heavy lifting in the victory that gave the Clippers the confidence they seemed to be lacking early in the contest.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has apologized to the mother of Denver Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin. Cuban made a crack after a Mavericks loss in Dallas on Saturday in their NBA playoff series. According to Cuban, a fan called the Nuggets "thugs." Cuban looked at Martin's mother, Lydia Moore of Dallas, and said, "That includes your son." Martin's agent told the Denver Post that Cuban said to Martin's mother that her son is a "punk."
