Kevin Augustine, who left the USC basketball team this week and plans to transfer next fall, insists his departure had nothing to do with the emergence of freshman Brandon Granville, who has assumed Augustine's position as starting point guard. "It wasn't an issue about Brandon Granville," Augustine said. "I was happy for him. I hope the best for him." A former Westchester High star, the 5-foot-9 Granville has started every game this season.

USC point guard Kevin Augustine has quit the team and will leave school after completing final exams this week. Expected to start this season, Augustine slipped down the depth chart after taking leave for personal reasons. Since returning, the 6-foot sophomore has played behind freshman Brandon Granville. "It's nothing against my teammates and my coaches, I just realized I don't fit in at USC," Augustine said. "Maybe I'll fit in somewhere else a little better."

Kevin Augustine should be back with the Trojans--and back in practice--this afternoon. The sophomore point guard, expected to start this season, took a leave of absence for personal reasons two weeks ago. He reappeared at USC's exhibition Saturday night, sitting on the bench in street clothes. "There were never any problems with my teammates, no problems with my coaches," he said afterward.

Point guard Kevin Augustine, who took a leave from the team for personal reasons last week, is expected to return Monday. Augustine, a projected starter, has missed numerous practices and is suspended for an exhibition game on Saturday. Coach Henry Bibby might also hold him out of the nonconference opener Nov. 17 against San Diego State. Bibby said the sophomore is "dealing with some issues within himself." "I called him twice this morning at his dorm and right now he's doing OK," Bibby said.

USC point guard Kevin Augustine, expected to guide the Trojan offense this season, has taken leave from the team for personal reasons. Augustine met with Coach Henry Bibby on Monday to discuss his status after having missed several days of practice and an exhibition game last week. "Kevin and I talked today about his situation," Bibby said. "My concern is that things work out right for him. He knows what he needs to do to return." The 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore could not be reached for comment.
