Faith can move mountains. Nebraska point guard Kevin Augustine is certain of that. What it does for bruised ribs, well, that remains to be seen. But at this point, the former Mater Dei High and USC guard has to believe. Augustine didn't sit out 1 1/2 years, working, waiting, self-evaluating, to let a few bruised bones slow him down. Or that groin injury. Or that bulging disc in his back. Or that broken toe. That's not a breakdown of career injuries.

USC point guard Kevin Augustine, expected to guide the Trojan offense this season, has taken leave from the team for personal reasons. Augustine met with Coach Henry Bibby on Monday to discuss his status after having missed several days of practice and an exhibition game last week. Playing with tendinitis in his right shoulder, freshman Kevin Augustine was held scoreless and had one assist in 12 minutes in an 81-71 loss to Long Beach State on Saturday night. Doctors have compared Augustine's right rotator cuff to that of someone who pitched too many nine-inning games. USC's 4-5 record is its worst nine-game start since the 1987-88 season, when the Trojans went 2-7 en route to a 7-21 record.

A former Westchester High star, the 5-foot-9 Granville has started every game this season.
