USC has fired men's basketball coach Kevin O'Neill, the school announced on its website Monday. Longtime USC assistant coach Bob Cantu will serve as interim head coach while a search for O'Neill's successor is conducted. "I would like to thank Kevin O'Neill for his four years of service to USC," Athletic Director Pat Haden said. "He took over a program under difficult circumstances because of our NCAA issues and, despite that, he was able to do some good things. "It was hard for me to evaluate him as a head coach until this year when he had enough players and veterans to compete.

Kevin O'Neill, the longtime Miami Dolphins trainer fired in the wake of the team's bullying scandal, is firing back at the franchise through his lawyer. Attorney Jack Scarola issued a statement Thursday on behalf of O'Neill, who in the recently released report of investigator Ted Wells is accused of laughing at inappropriate jokes aimed at offensive tackle Jonathan Martin and an unnamed assistant trainer. O'Neill accompanied Dolphins executives, coaches and scouts to last month's scouting combine in Indianapolis, but was fired on the eve of the annual event.

Julian Jacobs, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman guard for USC had been recruited to be a Trojan by then-Coach Kevin O'Neill, who played a style of basketball where if either team scored 50 points it seemed as if the scoreboard at Galen Center might explode. On Sunday, Jacobs had five dunks during a public scrimmage USC held at Galen Center. Under O'Neill he might not have had five dunks all season. It was the first time USC fans could see the makings of the team new Coach Andy Enfield will put on the court when the Trojans open Nov. 8 at Utah State, a bit of a scheduling challenge Enfield said he wouldn't have chosen.

Answer: You know, [Athletic Director Pat Haden] sent me a text last night that he and [senior associate athletic director] Steve Lopes wanted to meet at 8 this morning. Did I know what it was about? In this business you always have that sense. Nothing surprises me. I thanked him for the time at USC. I enjoyed my time, had a great time.

J.T. Terrell had good moments with Kevin O'Neill and not so good ones. He went from being USC's leading scorer this season to spending entire games on the bench. Terrell is a junior guard who is in his first season on the Trojans basketball team after transferring from Wake Forest, but he summed up his coach as well as anyone Monday, a few hours after O'Neill was fired. "KO, any day of the week, is just priceless," Terrell said. "You never know what you're going to get. " USC has a record of 7-10 this season, O'Neill's fourth.

As Kevin O'Neill arrived at the locker room after Wednesday's 55-40 season-ending loss to UCLA at Staples Center, a reporter asked USC's coach if he'd been informed whether he would return next season. "I'm assuming I'm back," O'Neill said. "I think we'd be having a meeting right now if I wasn't. " Then he jokingly checked the text messages on his phone just to make sure. O'Neill needn't have worried. Though the Trojans won only six games and lost a school-record 26, Athletic Director Pat Haden reiterated that O'Neill would be on the sideline for a fourth season.

As USC's interim basketball coach, Bob Cantu has a modest record of 4-3 — a mark that looks a lot better considering that the Trojans were 7-10 when Kevin O'Neill was fired and Cantu promoted about a month ago. Before the switch, USC not only was losing more than it was winning, it was doing so by scoring an average of 64.4 points per game. Since Cantu has taken over, the Trojans are averaging 72 points per game — a scoring figure they surpassed only twice with O'Neill. Guard J.T. Terrell says Cantu has taken "the leash" off the team.
