Brett Hundley is rarely so easily shocked. But point out that all 32 NFL teams have passed on UCLA quarterbacks in the draft since Cade McNown was taken in 1999 and Hundley — a bright student with aspirations of being a doctor — gets that bug-eyed look and is unable to form sentences. "Really? Wow. Seriously? Crazy. " Hundley stammered. "I was 6 years old. " Hundley, who turns 20 in June, could be the quarterback to end that spiral. So could Kevin Prince, who has spent nearly as much time in the training room as the film room.

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince was cleared to resume practice Tuesday after going through tests. Prince, who suffered a concussion against Washington, went through an exertion test this morning and then was cleared to by a team doctor to lift weights and practice. Barring a setback, he will start Saturday against Washington State. "I rode the bike for 30 minutes and did some up-downs," Prince said. "The training staff asked how I was feeling and I said I felt normal. There will be various tests through Thursday."

Brett Hundley , Kevin Prince , Richard Brehaut and the rest of UCLA's quarterbacks will have to wait. Coach Jim Mora said Thursday that a decision on a starter will come in August, two weeks into fall training camp. "I'm going to announce our starting quarterback on Aug. 16, after two weeks of summer camp," Mora said. "We're planning on having real intense scrimmages on the 15th and the 16th and right after that, it is go time. " UCLA opens the season at Rice two weeks later.

UCLA's fourth spring football practice ended near dusk Tuesday, and as the field began to empty, a 310-pound offensive lineman began sprinting, thundering sideline to sideline in a sweat-soaked shirt. Xavier Su'a-Filo is trying to shake loose the cobwebs from two years away from football, when the sophomore offensive lineman was on a Mormon mission. He's also trying to adjust to an offense with a tempo he described by snapping his fingers three times in quick succession. "It's no-huddle, you've got to constantly be going," he said.

Kevin Prince , UCLA's starting quarterback, spent the week before training camp preparing for the chore ahead of him . . . by playing golf and reading a book. This wasn't taking his new job for granted. This was following orders. "He worked hard, starting in the middle of January, through spring ball and the summer," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said. "I told him to go away and read a book." Leisure time is over, as Prince, who won the starting job in the spring, has been handed the keys to the offense.

The hard and fast stance at UCLA practice Wednesday was that quarterback Kevin Prince , sore shoulder and all, would start against Stanford on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. But for a second consecutive day, Prince was limited, and he did not throw a pass during the second half of practice. Last week, Prince worked through the week as he pushed to get ready for the Bruins' opener at Kansas State after a torn muscle in his back kept him out nearly three weeks. Prince then labored at times in a 31-22 loss, completing nine of 26 passes for 120 yards.

Quarterback Kevin Prince and tailback Johnathan Franklin had the type of days needed for the UCLA offense to be effective. It just happened on a day the Bruins' defense collapsed in a 45-26 loss to California. Franklin, playing on a tender ankle, had 101 yards rushing, including a 74-yard touchdown run. "It was a counter and I was patient, then hit the hole," Franklin said. "Then it was just like practice, just finish the run in the end zone." As for his injured ankle, Franklin said, "It's nothing but pain."

Fresh from a weekend of rest, UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince looked Monday as if he would be capable of playing against Kansas State by Saturday. Prince, whose training camp has been disrupted by a small tear in a back muscle, split time with Richard Brehaut running the first-team offense. Both were erratic with throws, but Prince had more velocity than he has had since before being injured Aug.10. "This is what we've been working up, this is what the goal was — to rest the weekend, take the Friday scrimmage off, hoping that I could do a little more today," Prince said.

Brett Hundley as UCLA's starting quarterback is a decision that may be in the near future. Hundley, who was a redshirt as a freshman in 2011, took a big step toward winning the job Saturday. He ran the first team almost exclusively, getting a large chunk of reps as UCLA coaches wanted to get a look at his decision-making abilities. "We wanted to see him make all the small decisions you have to make in this offense," offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said. "We put a lot of decisions on the quarterback at the snap of the ball.

Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut have done this dance before. The last three seasons, the two have battled to be UCLA's starting quarterback. Prince won each time, though it was a photo finish heading into the 2011 season. What changed this spring are the people they are trying to impress. New Coach Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone are getting their first looks at the two. "You've just got to go with it," Prince said. "There's nothing you can do to change the circumstance.

UCLA's quarterback situation seemed to gain some clarity, yet remained murky. Kevin Prince , Richard Brehaut and Brett Hundley received all the work in the brief team scrimmage Saturday. Jerry Neuheisel was given time in situational 11-on-11 drills. Nothing, though, was said to have changed. "What I have to do is go watch he film," Coach Jim Mora said. "The old coach's cliche. " Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone added, "I'm going to have to give you coach-talk.

UCLA Coach Jim Mora said he'd like to have the quarterback competition narrowed down by the third week of spring practice. That's a week away, but through Thursday's practice, the Bruins' fifth this spring, Kevin Prince , Richard Brehaut , Brett Hundley and Jerry Neuheisel have been splitting snaps fairly evenly with the first team during team periods, making it hard to determine whom Mora favors. Still, Prince and Brehaut, who each started games last season, and the highly touted redshirt freshman Hundley would seem to be the favorites for the starting position.

The Jim Mora era has begun with a #$@# . In UCLA's first spring pads practice Saturday, in front of several hundred fans whose jaws need to be scraped off Spaulding Field, the new coach lit a fuse under the traditional Bruins culture and blew it to blue bits. He cursed. Lordy, did he curse. At one point midway through the practice, he gathered his team around him and screamed at them for several long and loud profane minutes. He informed them that their effort stunk and invited them to leave the field if their effort continued to stink, all in words that made the grass blush.

" "It's the same deal, just swollen a little bit and a little stiff," Prince said. "The trainers said that was enough. " Richard Brehaut , who started against Washington State, worked at quarterback when Prince sat out. As for his availability for Thursday's practice, Prince said, "We'll continue to get treatments and see how it is then.

UCLA got rid of one Neuheisel last November (see: Rick , former head football coach). But it gained another Neuheisel this spring (see: Jerry , walk-on freshman quarterback). For the junior Neuheisel, who shares his dad's friendly demeanor, aw-shucks smile, set of narrow blue eyes, and head of thin blond locks, it's obviously a bit strange. "As soon as I signed here, the dream was to win a Rose Bowl together," Neuheisel, who played at Los Angeles Loyola High School, said after the Bruins' spring practice Thursday.

UCLA opens spring practice Tuesday. The Bruins will have 15 workouts followed by a scrimmage at the Rose Bowl on May 5. All practices, including the scrimmage, are open to the public. Here are five questions facing the Bruins: Can UCLA develop a quality quarterback and keep him healthy? Bruins quarterbacks were once checked out by the NFL. Too often now they are checked out by an MRI. Nothing will be scrutinized more this spring than the quarterback competition among Kevin Prince, Richard Brehaut, Brett Hundley and T.J. Millweard.
