UCLA's fourth spring football practice ended near dusk Tuesday, and as the field began to empty, a 310-pound offensive lineman began sprinting, thundering sideline to sideline in a sweat-soaked shirt. Xavier Su'a-Filo is trying to shake loose the cobwebs from two years away from football, when the sophomore offensive lineman was on a Mormon mission. He's also trying to adjust to an offense with a tempo he described by snapping his fingers three times in quick succession. "It's no-huddle, you've got to constantly be going," he said.

Kevin Prince , UCLA's starting quarterback, spent the week before training camp preparing for the chore ahead of him . . . by playing golf and reading a book. This wasn't taking his new job for granted. This was following orders. "He worked hard, starting in the middle of January, through spring ball and the summer," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said. "I told him to go away and read a book." Leisure time is over, as Prince, who won the starting job in the spring, has been handed the keys to the offense.

The hard and fast stance at UCLA practice Wednesday was that quarterback Kevin Prince , sore shoulder and all, would start against Stanford on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. But for a second consecutive day, Prince was limited, and he did not throw a pass during the second half of practice. Last week, Prince worked through the week as he pushed to get ready for the Bruins' opener at Kansas State after a torn muscle in his back kept him out nearly three weeks. Prince then labored at times in a 31-22 loss, completing nine of 26 passes for 120 yards.

Quarterback Kevin Prince and tailback Johnathan Franklin had the type of days needed for the UCLA offense to be effective. It just happened on a day the Bruins' defense collapsed in a 45-26 loss to California. Franklin, playing on a tender ankle, had 101 yards rushing, including a 74-yard touchdown run. "It was a counter and I was patient, then hit the hole," Franklin said. "Then it was just like practice, just finish the run in the end zone." As for his injured ankle, Franklin said, "It's nothing but pain."

Fresh from a weekend of rest, UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince looked Monday as if he would be capable of playing against Kansas State by Saturday. Prince, whose training camp has been disrupted by a small tear in a back muscle, split time with Richard Brehaut running the first-team offense. Both were erratic with throws, but Prince had more velocity than he has had since before being injured Aug.10. "This is what we've been working up, this is what the goal was — to rest the weekend, take the Friday scrimmage off, hoping that I could do a little more today," Prince said.
