Well, Mighty Duck center Kevin Todd certainly finished his first-period scoring chance Monday at the Pond. Pity he was camped out in the crease and his apparent goal at the 18:08 mark of the first period was washed out. Todd didn't rail against his misfortune, didn't curse and scream--although he seemed to have every reason to do so. Instead, he skated to the bench and accepted his fate. Twenty-five games without a goal and the strain apparently hasn't yet overwhelmed Todd.

Kevin Todd has gone from the slag heap to a prominent spot on the Duck roster. Claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh on Oct. 4, Todd has given the Ducks' punchless offense a boost while playing on the top line with Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. Todd signed a two-year deal with Pittsburgh last summer but was placed on waivers when the Penguins acquired veteran defenseman Craig Muni. Now, Todd is the Ducks' second-leading scorer with four goals and a team-leading eight assists.

Kevin Todd was confused at first, then angry, worried and, finally, happy to be returning to Southern California. Todd still hasn't figured out why the Pittsburgh Penguins dangled him on the waiver wire Oct. 4, but he is certain of one thing: He's glad to be a Mighty Duck. On the day before the Penguins opened the season, Todd was given the word. The Ducks had just picked him up off the waiver wire. Todd had no idea he was going to be placed on waivers.

Kevin Todd landed in Toronto Friday night and landed on the top line with Jari Kurri and Teemu Selanne Saturday night. "With Paul [Kariya's] situation uncertain, he's capable of playing on the top line," Duck Coach Ron Wilson said. "He's also capable of playing on the third line." That's praise, not criticism. Todd is a gritty two-way player who can score--and he's an unusually good find off waivers.

The Ducks claimed center Kevin Todd off waivers from Pittsburgh on Friday, continuing their effort to shore up an offense that drops off sharply after Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. Todd, 28, scored 16 goals and 43 points in 74 games for the Kings last season and drew praise from Kings Coach Larry Robinson. A solid two-way player who has played in 291 NHL games, Todd will be available for the season-opener against the Maple Leafs tonight.

The Kings, searching for a third-line center, got 25-year-old Kevin Todd from the Chicago Blackhawks for a fourth-round pick in this year's draft. Todd, who had 21 goals and 42 assists as a rookie with the New Jersey Devils in 1990-91, fell into disfavor with Blackhawk Coach Darryl Sutter and has not played since Feb. 20. He had five goals and six assists in 35 games. "I realized about 10 games ago I wouldn't be playing in Chicago unless something really strange happened," Todd said.
